This week we are doing some nonfiction reading and are reading articles from this month’s National Geographic magazine. All of the kids should have self-selected independent reading books here at school. There is going to be time every day for them to be reading independently. The kids should be reading at least 5 chapter books independently this term. We are also doing some practice Science NECAP tests. Examples of this work will be coming home in the Friday Folders. In writing, I am teaching a couple of lessons on “showing and not telling”. The kids are still working on their S.O.S. stories.

Math: We are still working with fractions and fractional parts. The kids are using their fraction kits to compare fractional parts and to add and subtract fractions with like denominators. We have been using compasses to make circles. The kids have been splitting them into thirds, sixths, twelfths, fourths, eighths and sixteenths. At the end of the week we are going to talk more formally about decimals. The kids will be learning about tenths and hundredths. Mental math this week has been a review of division with remainders. You may notice that I am sending home mad minutes for homework again. The kids are having a difficult time recalling their facts and I feel like they need more practice. The eBoard has some great games that help reinforce multiplication and division facts.

Other: We have a lot of field trips coming up. I will let you know if we will need chaperones. Science NECAPS are May 15th, 21st and 22nd. If anyone would like to send in healthy snacks and drinks for the testing days, I know the kids would appreciate it. Please make sure your child is well rested and in school on these days. If you know your child is going to be absent, please let me know a.s.a.p. We will be testing from 9-11:00 each morning. We will be releasing the trout over the next couple of weeks. I will keep you posted on their development. As of right now, they are still absorbing their egg sacs and are not swimming up for food. They will need a bit more time, before they are ready to be released. Thank you all for coming to the Science Inquiry Night. The kids did a great job sharing their experiments, and they were very excited to have you all there.

Karen
