Writing Science Fair Results

Writing Science Fair Results

The results section of the science fair report includes the data tables, graphs, and sentences that summarize the data.

Use the following steps to create sentences that summarize the data:

Step 1. Write a topic sentence stating the independent and dependent variables. The sentence should make a reference to the data tables and graphs.

Ex: The effect of temperature of water on the germination of radish seeds is shown in data table 1 and graph 2.

Step 2: Describe and compare the data in each trial. If the mean is calculated, compare the means in each trial. If you are germinating plants, compare the growth rates or the length of the seedling of all the plants in the different groups.

Ex. The mean of the amount of sugar dissolved in water that had a temperature of 4C was 10g. The mean of the amount of sugar dissolved in water with a temperature of 10C was 20g.

Ex: The mean length of the radish seedling grown in sunlight for 10 days was 20cm. The mean length of the radishes grown in the dark for 10 days was 40cm.

Step 3: Write a sentence describing any variations in data (ex. range or standard deviation). See me if you are calculating standard deviation.

Ex: The range for the amount of sugar dissolved in different temperatures of water was 10g to 20g.

Ex: The length of the seedlings grown in different amounts of light was 20cm to 40cm.
