Student Worksheet

I,Robot (2004) directed by Alex Proyas

In the year 2035 a techno-phobic cop investigates a crime that may have been perpetrated by a robot, which leads to a larger threat to humanity… Your group will be allocated ONE of the following elements of the film:

◦ SETTING (You will closely examine the setting of the film, making notes whilst viewing and then shape your notes to explain how closely the setting reflects the conventions of the genre)

◦ CHARACTERISATION (especially the HERO) (You will closely examine the character of Del Spooner (Will Smith), making notes whilst viewing and then shape your notes to explain how conventional he is in terms of the genre)

◦ THE OTHER (Sonny the Robot: an NS-5) (You will closely examine how Sonny is represented to us (appearance, behaviour, mannerisms), making notes whilst viewing and then shape your notes to explain how closely he conforms to the stereotype of the Other in the genre) According to Isaac Asimov, the Three Laws of Robotics are: 1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

◦ TECHNOLOGY AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO SOCIETY (You will closely examine how the NS-5 robots [NOT SONNY] are represented to us (appearance, behaviour, mannerisms), making notes whilst viewing and then shape your notes to explain what fears and anxieties they reflect in terms of society’s view of science and technology).

◦ THE VILLAIN (You will closely examine who the ‘villain’ is in the film and how we are shown the ‘villain’, making notes whilst viewing and then shape your notes to explain what ideas are associated with the identified ‘villain(s)’). All finished notes will be used to present back to the class as a panel discussion. I, Robot (2004) directed by Alex Proyas CAST Will Smith .... Del Spooner

Bridget Moynahan ....
