Lab 1 Mechanical Dissection

Lab 1 Mechanical Dissection

Lab #1 Mechanical Dissection & Reverse Engineering

Purpose: Mechanical dissection and reverse engineering are techniques that are helpful for people to learn how devices work in a hands on manner. Engineers must often examine how things work in order to improve upon them or create entirely new devices.

Procedure: In this lab you will take apart a common household object, analyze its components, and reassemble the object.

You will write a short paper (1-2 pages plus sketches) during the lab session. Answer the questions listed below in your paper. Your paper should use correct grammar, spelling, paragraph format, etc. (i.e., don’t just write out the questions with your answers underneath). Part B should be the longest section; A and C can be answered with a few sentences each. Turn in your paper (one per team) at the end of class. Your paper should be written using Microsoft Word. If you haven’t used Microsoft Word before and need assistance, contact the instructor.

Label your sketches (i.e., Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.) and refer to them by that figure number when referring to them in the text of your report. You may staple the sketches as an appendix to your report.

A. Explore the Outside of the Object 1. What is the function of the object? 2. How do people operate this object? How was it designed for ease of use? 3. Describe the outside appearance. How was it designed to appeal to customers?

B. Dissect the Object 1. What are the major subsystems? How do they contribute to the object’s function? 2. Explain the operation of each subsystem. Show hand sketches where appropriate.

C. Re-assemble the Object 1. Describe the ease of maintaining the object (for example, how easy it is to replace parts). 2. Are there any changes that you might make to the design of this object?
