<p>Chapter 2: Internet and the World Wide Web</p><p>Objective:</p><p> Explaining a basic LAN structure and network devices.</p><p> Brief history about the internet.</p><p> Explaining the concept of ISP.</p><p> Explaining a few reasons for the internet being used.</p><p> Describing different web browsers and explaining browser cookies.</p><p> Explaining the concept of URL and Domain (Top level domain name and Domain name country codes).</p><p> Explaining what TCP/IP is.</p><p> Explaining differences between internet, intranet and extranet.</p><p> Explaining different types of E-commerce and the advantages of it.</p><p> Explaining the 10 categories of websites.</p><p> Software applications on the web.</p><p> Learning netiquettes.</p><p>Chapter Outline ______</p><p> Inventor of the internet: Tim Berners-Lee.</p><p> Role of the ISP: It refers you to a company that provides service for a fee (normally monthly).</p><p> Other types of providers are OSP, AOL and WSP.</p><p> Top 10 reasons for using the internet:</p><p> o Information: Largest existing library with different forms of media.</p><p> o Communication: It provides different forms of communication with other users.</p><p> o Entertainment: A lot of people use the internet for gaming, videos, etc.</p><p> o Work: It gives an alternative to the 9-5 workday as many people work from home.</p><p> o School: A lot of schools use the internet for grading, assignments, etc. o Relationships: People use the internet to build relationships via social media.</p><p> o Market: Internet is a great place for people to do research on an item before they want to buy/sell it.</p><p> o Sexuality: Primarily pornography.</p><p> o Self-expression: Internet serves as a medium for people to express their thought and views on various topics.</p><p> o Ask for help: Anonymous help can be asked for or given on the internet.</p><p> Web browser: It’s a software application that is used to locate, retrieve and display content from the WWW.</p><p> Today’s browsers are fully functional supporting almost all formats offered on the computer system.</p><p> o Mobile browser: Similar to a web browser, but is optimized to display content on the WWW onto a mobile device.</p><p> o Browser cookies: Pieces of information that are stored on the browser even after its use has been terminated.</p><p> Why do I need a browser? : A browser allows you to load and access all that’s on the WWW, after you have access from an ISP.</p><p> URL: Uniform Resource Locator; each web page has a unique URL by which it can be identified on the internet.</p><p> Two main components of a URL: protocol and domain name.</p><p> An internet address has four fields of numbers separated by periods. This is called an IP address.</p><p> Top level domain names: .com, .edu, .gov, .int, .mil, .net, .org</p><p> Domain names country code: .uk, .us, .au, .de, .fr, .nl</p><p> Internet configuration:</p><p> o TCP/IP: Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol.</p><p> o Internet.</p><p> o Intranet.</p><p> o Extranet.</p><p> E-commerce: Any kind of business/transaction that involves exchanging information on the internet.</p><p> Categories: o B2B: Business to Business.</p><p> o B2C: Business to Consumer.</p><p> o C2B: Consumer to Business.</p><p> o C2C: Consumer to Consumer.</p><p> Categories of websites:</p><p> o Personal: free server space offered by ISP.</p><p> o Photo-sharing.</p><p> o Social networking.</p><p> o Entertainment.</p><p> o Mobile device.</p><p> o Blogging.</p><p> o Informational.</p><p> o Business.</p><p> o Web Directory.</p><p> o E-commerce.</p><p> Software Application on the web:</p><p> o E-mail.</p><p> o Internet forum.</p><p> o Podcast.</p><p> o Mailing list.</p><p> o Chat.</p><p> o Instant Messaging (IM).</p><p> o Text messaging.</p><p> Web search: Search engines are used for web search. They search the keyword on the internet and return the results which include those keywords.</p><p> Netiquette: Behavioral standards one should maintain while using the internet.</p>
