Segal Building Method - Walters Way

Based on Timber "Post and Beam" Structure - going back centuries Tudor Black & White houses! All done on a modular grid, established on 600mm based on the exterior panel sizes. Upright timber columns and beams do load bearing - not walls, making very flexible for any kind of arrangement, internal walls can be placed anywhere, windows located anywhere. So flexible that residents have easily repositioned Walls, added Windows, extended the buildings.

Building Planning As part of the overall Segal method, the planning has a number of steps that Walter laid out . Modular Grid Using the modular grid to show the layout of rooms etc Basic outline sketches Layout Drawings Plans and elevation Structural Layout To show the columns and beams Calculations Weight loading etc for building regulations etc. Framing Drawings Showing joists / joints etc Schedule Of Materials Can now be created from the above processes Standard Catalogue Of Elements Shows standard construction methods and plans for the shell of the house Building Instructions Step by step guide of construction

Plasterboard Interior

Woodwall Insulation

Glazel Exterior Panel Sketch Of The Frame Of a House - inc bracing Wall Materials

Construction With the Segal method, Construction is done in the following Order : Foundations Piles for where the timber columns are going to rest ( they are not cemented in ) not standard strip foundations like normal buildings. Thes e Houses have 18 foot deep Piles! Frame Is constructed and erected, Basically the skeleton of the whole house is - Note cross bracing and beams for floors. Roof Laid so making the house underneath can be worked on with less interruption from weather ( normal buildings the roof goes on last !) Materials are waterproof bitumen / rubber layer, with a covering of stones on top to protect the waterproof layer. Floors Are now laid so making easier working area. External Walls Sandwich of a number of materials, Walter Segal thought of a wall like Clothing, a water proof layer ( rain coat), insulation (woolly Jumper ), internal ( T-shirt ). Thus glazel sheets (industrial cladding), woodwall (a paper and cement board - we now use Kingspan foam in new extensions, better insulation properties) , plaster board. Windows Some originally where hand built, but most had Aluminium frame, and now owners are upgrading to Eco Plus high spec windows in a number of properties. Internal Walls Plasterboard and wood wall insulation, fixed any where required as per the modular plan. Ceilings Plasterboard panels are fixed in place. these panels can be removed for later access to services. Stairs Are built, plus external walkways and decking can be laid. Services Electrics. plumbing etc . Heating standard domestic Condensing boilers, some houses have added solar panels and ground source heat pump.

More info : www.segalselfbuild.co.uk - www.segalbuildings.me.uk or www.tinyurl.com/segal-buildings IKW 2010-09-17
