They often cannot be used as synonyms; instead think of what you are trying to say and find the nearest alternative. discussed options drew attention to worried debated alternatives outlined concerned deliberated choice reported troubled considered preference raised uneasy examined opportunity informed anxious analysed understood apprehensive benefits of reminded that planned merits of recalled potential intended advantages of emphasised possibility meant worth clarified likelihood hoped value of illustrated prospect proposed defined chance said demonstrated probability disagreed stated indicated disputed reported decided not the case established problems resolved confirmed drawbacks approved agreed added dangers concluded concurred commented uncertainty determined verified disadvantages existence of declared discussed the problems with issue of pointed out chose the existence of problems in reality of explained opted the extent of problems in topic of acknowledged selected the probability of problems in problem of suggested picked the potential for problems in question of described named the possibility of problems in advised preferred highlighted

Useful words for actions

Every minute item should be finished off with an action point (or a ‘no action’ point). This is to ensure that the outcome is absolutely clear, both in the short and long term. The six alternatives below will cover most eventualities and if something else is needed, just use whatever is most logical.

An action point A clear statement as to what is going to be done. The initials or name of the person should also be shown, along with the deadline.

© Joanna Gutmann 2008 No action necessary When there is a decision to do nothing. This may be a clear decision or a vague, “Well, that’s it for us then, matter closed I think.” It can also be used where there was never a suggestion that action might be necessary, for example after receiving a report or a general discussion.

No decision taken Implies that the committee forgot to take a decision that was needed. This will often happen when someone notices the time, panics and moves on swiftly to the next item.

No consensus reached This implies that the committee could not agree but that some outcome had been expected.

Deferred to… The item is deferred to the next (or a later) meeting.

Referred to… The item is referred to another group, a sub-committee, etc

© Joanna Gutmann 2008
