<p> NAYGN and WiN-Canada Information Session NAYGN and WiN-Canada are co-hosting an afternoon information session during CMNCC 2017 and also welcoming inspirational speaker, Alex DeLorey, 2017 Canadian Astronaut Finalist. Enjoy a coffee and a treat while you learn more about the challenges (and fun!) associated with training to become the next Canadian Astronaut. While working full time at SNC-Lavalin, Alex DeLorey (Project Manager for the Components and Feeder Design, Bruce Major Component Replacement Project) also found time to train and be as strong candidate to be the next Canadian Astronaut. Alex has a BASc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New Brunswick and has a keen interest in in all things mechanical and applicable to physics. Alex will discuss learning from your experiences today to be prepared for tomorrow when you don’t know what tomorrow will bring. WiN (Women in Nuclear) is a world-wide association of women working professionally in various fields of nuclear energy and radiation applications. WiN-Canada has six regional chapters that are active in their area; helping to educate the public on the benefits of nuclear power and medicine as well as providing networking and professional opportunities for their members. NAYGN (North American Young Generation in Nuclear) is an organization formed under the purpose of uniting young people in the fields of nuclear science and technology. Individuals can participate in the organization by becoming a continental member, joining a local chapter or joining a continental committee. NAYGN-Canada is composed of nine active NAYGN Chapters spanning across Canada. More about the talk: The journey is more important than the destination if you ask Alex DeLorey, even if the destination happened to be outer space. The Professional Engineer who grew up in Riverview, New Brunswick was one of the finalists in the 2017 Canadian Space Agency’s Astronaut recruitment campaign. Alex has always had a desire to push his boundaries and to learn about himself along the way. Reflecting back on his life experiences—whether it was saving a friend's life, working around the globe, learning to fly a plane or jumping out of one —they each were critical in his success in being a finalist. And while he may have just missed out on this space mission, his life’s mission and powerful message to others endures—live your life to the fullest and learn from the journey. Because everywhere you've been, and everything you've done, will help you get to where you’re going next. It might even take you somewhere out of this world.
