The Dolphin Dispatch

The Dolphin Dispatch News from Room 7 November 13, 2015

Here we are in mid November with the Turkey Trot right around the corner. There is information below from Mrs. Iosca about the trot.

This week in language arts we are learning about the digraph “sh”. We have been working on activities that correspond to our Harcourt story, Fun With Fish. HFW/Vocabulary words for the week were away, many, how, their, some. Our focus skills were rereading and recognizing story details. One of the activities we worked on was tied to one of our standards: Distinguish between information provided by pictures/illustrations and information provided by the words in a text. This is somewhat challenging when looking at a whole story. We will continue to practice this skill during literacy centers. Next week our phonics skills will focus on the “ch/tch” digraph. Our weekly story, I’m a Caterpillar, is a wonderful nonfiction selection about the life cycle of a butterfly. We will be reviewing nouns (person, animal, place, thing) and doing some categorizing of words.

In math we continue to work on strategies for subtracting in addition to solving multiple types of word problems. Subtraction is a bit more challenging than addition, although some kiddos are beginning to see related facts.

We finished up our bat reports and have moved on to a step-by- step writing project called “How To Cook A Turkey.” The kiddos wrote a rough draft after we did some whole-group brainstorming. They published on the computer, which is one of our writing standards. I didn’t “fix” anything because I want you to see what a great job the kiddos did with typing and inventive spelling; i.e. mash putados.

Our very colorful and creative turkeys are on display in the hallway. We enjoy seeing all of the new turkeys going up each day. Keep them coming!

Important Information:  Book celebrations next week, but not the week of November 23rd due to the Thanksgiving break  Next Art Masterpiece on Tuesday, November 17th at 8:15 a.m.  Estrella’s Annual Turkey Trot, Wednesday, November 25th  Thanksgiving Holiday-no school-November 26th and 27th  November Homework Calendar due on Tuesday, December 1st. December calendars will come home next Friday.

Trotting Turkeys
