Clemson University Department of Bioengineering

Creative Inquiry in Bioengineering Electrophysiology-based Medical Devices BIOE 4510-005

Overview This CI seeks to develop and design new ideas for medical devices. Examples of current projects include an eye controlled PowerPoint presentation as well as slot cars that are driven by the flexing of the biceps brachii muscles. Each of these projects make use of electrophysiology which is an electric signal generated by human tissues. These projects have been developed as demonstrations for young students as well as proofs of concept for real world medical problems. Going forward this group wants to develop new technologies for real world medical problems. We are looking for new ideas from innovative and creative students. Examples of commercialized products include glucometers as well as pacemakers to name a few.

A successful student in this CI will have creative ideas and think outside of the box. This is an excellent opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the classroom to practical experience. Students will gain valuable experience in taking an idea from concept to creation. All majors will be considered.

Skills Developed:

Circuit design and analysis

Medical Device Design

Hardware Interfacing

Computer Programming (C/C++)

Bioelectrical Interfacing

IRB Protocol

Patent/Intellectual Property

Questionnaire

1.
