<p>MEDIA RELEASE</p><p>FREE, CONFIDENTIAL HEALTH AND COUNSELING SERVICES FOR YOUTH OPEN IN ELBASAN AND KORCA</p><p>Tirana, 1 July 2005 – Two new centers offering services specially tailored for young people have opened in Elbasan and Korça, increasing to four the number of youth- friendly service centers opened in Albania since May 2003.</p><p>The centers opened today which are an integrated part of the primary health care, offer a wide range of health and counseling services, providing a convenient place where young people can go for confidential services without facing embarrassment or stigma.</p><p>The centers are staffed by a multidisciplinary team of doctors, psychologists, social workers and youth peer counselors trained specifically on the youth-friendly approach. Services are provided free of charge. </p><p>Services include prevention, testing and diagnosis/treatment of sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS; counseling and management of stress, depression and other mental health issues; prevention of unwanted pregnancies; skills in parenting, negotiation and self-esteem; and counseling for substance abuse. </p><p>The centre will be run primarily by a youth board, made up of representatives from staff and students. Young people will be consulted in designing the services and in continuous improvement in the service quality and standards of care. </p><p>The Ministries of Health, Education & Science, and Culture, Youth & Sport have supported and endorsed this model of providing comprehensive care to young people. National plans call for 12 more centres to open throughout Albania within the next five years.</p><p>The Youth-Friendly Services Centre in Elbasan is located at Lagj “11 Nentori”, Pallati 6 katesh, prane Maternitetit; in Korça it is located at Rr “Kico Drenova”, prane Drejtorise se Kujdesit Shendetesor Paresor.
