Name:______Period:______Date:______

DIFFUSION: Veggie (and Fruit) Take- Home Lab Question

Hypothesis

Materials: 2 cups, water, salt, 1 celery stick, 1 carrot, 9 raisins

Procedure

1. Fill 2 cups half-way with water. Add salt to Cup #1 ONLY while stirring to make a saturated salt solution (a saturated salt solution will have salt on the bottom of the cup). 2. Place two small pieces of fresh celery (about 2cm each), a fresh carrot (about 2cm each), and 3 raisins in each cup. 3. Label the cups: “Cup #1: Salt Water” and “Cup #2: Fresh Water” and place the cups somewhere safe for 24 hours. Record data and results every 2-3 hours in the data table on the next page.

Pre-Lab Questions

1. What will happen to the celery and carrot in fresh water? What texture, shape, and qualities do you expect them to have? Explain your thinking. Why does this seem like the correct prediction to you? ______2. What will happen to the celery and carrot in saturated salt water. What texture, shape, and qualities do you expect them to have? Explain your thinking. Why do you think this will happen? ______3. How do the raisins differ from the celery and carrot? Do you expect the raisins to respond in the same way as the celery and carrot? If not, describe what you expect the raisins to do in fresh and saturated salt water, and why. ______Results/Data: Record MANY observations of the carrots, celery and raisins. Cup #1: Salt Water Time Celery Carrot Raisins

Cup #2: Fresh Water Time Celery Carrot Raisin

Post-Lab Questions

1. What happened to the celery and carrot in fresh water? Feel the vegetables, bend them, and describe their texture and shape. Compare your observations to your predictions. ______2. What happened to the celery and carrot in saturated salt water? Feel the vegetables, bend them, and describe their texture and shape. Compare your observations to your predictions. ______3. What happened to the raisins in fresh and saturated salt water? Describe their size, shape, texture, and location in the beaker. Compare your observations to your predictions. ______4. Osmosis is when water moves from an area of high concentration (a lot of water) to an area of low concentration (not much pure water). Was osmosis involved in these experiments? If so, what effect did it have on the fruits and vegetables? ______5. Can humans survive by drinking salt water such as ocean water? Why or why not? Support your answer with evidence from the lab. ______Conclusion:

 Connect the conclusion to the PURPOSE/QUESTION.  Accept/reject your HYPOTHESIS.  1st Paragraph (Analysis): explain your data; state the results by quoting your data; explain why you accepted/rejected your HYPOTHESIS using DATA from your lab.  2nd Paragraph: explain what you learned; how this lab relates to the concepts we are studying in class; possible experimental errors; how this knowledge can be useful in the future; any advice you would give to someone to get better results in the future.
