Students evaluate, synthesize, and cite research to support their arguments. Throughout the course, students develop a personal writing style and voice by making appropriate grammatical, as well as stylistic, choices. Additionally, students read and analyze the rhetorical elements and their effects in non-fiction texts, including graphic images as forms of text, from many disciplines and historical periods.

Required Materials: College-ruled loose leaf paper, blue or black pens, highlighter, pencils, three-ring binder, five dividers for binder, school-issued iPad

Required Textbooks: Bedford St. Martin’s The Language of Composition, 2013 second edition

Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop Enriched Edition Level F (used first semester) Sadlier Vocabulary Workshop Enriched Edition Level H (used second semester)

Grades: Grades will be divided into three categories, and each category is worth a certain percentage of your class average. I will also supplement our test preparation with excerpts from Barron’s 7th edition AP English Language and Composition test preparation book. If you wish, you are welcome to purchase any AP Lang Exam test preparation book of your choosing from a store such as Books A Million or a site such as Amazon in order to augment our in-class test preparation with your own individual test prep at home.

Classroom Rules ALWAYS 1. Respect yourself, others, and school property. 2. Dress in the proper school uniform. 3. Arrive to class on time and be seated in your assigned seat. 4. Bring all supplies everyday, including a charged iPad. 5. Abstain from eating and drinking (with the exception of snack time), chewing gum, and grooming in class.

Classroom Policies

Technology Ipads are to be used only for academic purposes in the classroom. If you are playing a game, browsing an unauthorized website, or working on an unrelated assignment during class, your iPad will be taken up and/or a detention will be given. Also, you must have a charged iPad everyday for class.

Video and Photos In my classroom, photography, video, and audio recording are strictly prohibited. Students are not allowed to take photos or videos of themselves, their classmates, the teacher, the white board, or power point notes.

If a student takes a photo or video in my classroom, his or her device will be confiscated and turned into the Discipline Office. Disciplinary action and consequences will follow.

Emails An email between a teacher and student is a formal, professional medium of communication. Therefore, your emails to me should be 1) courteous and respectful in tone 2) grammatically correct using complete sentences 3) free of spelling errors 4) composed with a subject, greeting, and closing

Professional Email Example: Subject: Essay Submission

Hi Mrs. Johnston, I was wondering if you would also like a printed copy of our essay assignment, in addition to the digital copy uploaded to turnitin.com? Thanks so much, Ben Thomas

I will not respond to emails that lack a respectful tone or the necessary components of a professional email. Also, in accordance with Archdiocesan policy, I will only respond to student emails between the hours of 6:30 am- 9pm. If you email me after 4 pm, I will try to respond as soon as I can; however, please do not expect a response from me until the following day, as I will be home with my family (and most likely grading your papers!)

Tardiness If you enter the classroom after the tardy bell rings without a teacher note, I will mark you tardy unexcused in the computer. If you accumulate five unexcused tardies, you will be issued a detention from the Discipline Office, according to school policy.

Absences and Make-up Work If you are absent, please see me THE SAME DAY that you return to school to inquire about missed work. Do not wait one, two, or three days after returning to school to see me. It is YOUR responsibility to come to me and ask about make-up work and to schedule a time to make up a quiz or test.

All assignments missed due to an excused absence must be made up within ONE WEEK of returning to school. Any missed assignment not made up within ONE WEEK of returning to school will be entered as a zero.

Credit for missing homework while absent can only be given if the absence is marked as excused in my grade book by the Attendance office. A zero will be given for missing homework during an unexcused absence. This policy adheres to the school’s policy for absences and make-up work.

Homework Homework is due at the beginning of class! You will turn in your homework to the bin when you enter the classroom. Homework will be collected from the bin when the bell rings, and the teacher will announce “last call” for homework. After this time, homework is considered late. With the exception of an excused absence, I do not accept late homework; therefore, no credit will be given for late homework if you were aware of the assignment and present in class on the due date.

Discipline Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated because disruptions impede learning, and learning is the central goal in this classroom. Therefore, any student engaging in disruptive behavior will first be given a verbal warning. If the student continues disrupting the classroom, the teacher will email the Discipline Office and assign the student an after-school detention. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange after-school transportation. Restroom Students should use the time between classes and during lunch to use the restroom. In cases of emergency, students may use the restroom during class by raising his/her hand and asking the teacher’s permission. One student at a time will be allowed to use the restroom, and students must take the restroom pass with them.

Cell Phones Cell phones are not allowed to be seen, used, or heard in my classroom. If I see or hear a cell phone, I will confiscate it and turn it in to the Discipline Office on the first offense. No warnings will be given.

Academic Dishonesty Students are expected to be academically honest at all times. No forms of dishonesty will be permitted.
