<p> Grade 11 University Biology – Unit 3 Evolution Summative Assignment – In-Class Essay Summative</p><p>You must prepare an essay for one of the following topics.  How can an individual maintain faith when confronted with all the scientific evidence of evolution? Are religion and evolution compatible?  Do Darwin’s ideas about natural selection, mutations, “survival of the fittest” and evolution explain complex organisms (e.g., you) effectively? Evolution is easy to accept when it relates to simple changes, but how does it explain a complex change (e.g., eye, walking, “motorized” flagella in bacteria, brain development)? Does Darwin’s model fit effectively to that degree of change?</p><p>Your essay will be constructed, written AND completed within 45 minutes during class time on 29 Wednesday 2011. This essay will be worth, at minimum, 33% of the unit mark.</p><p>Rubric Level 0 Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4 (no participation) (50-59) (60-69) (70-79) (80-100) Knowledge Demonstrates thorough understanding of and evolutionary theory based on the inclusion Understanding and explanation of five ideas of evolution (e.g., gene flow, Fossil Record, mutation, Founder Effect, divergent evolution, natural selection, allele frequency) Thinking A clearly stated thesis with a statement of and direction (e.g., I agree, I disagree) Investigation Explores subject with considerable depth, and investigates all parts of the project with considerable effectiveness including presenting two arguments against the thesis topic of your essay Communicate Ideas and information organized with considerable effectiveness (e.g., most important arguments presented first, followed by arguments in descending order of importance Minimum of three pages, single-spaced essay All paragraphs indented or formatted to clearly show separation of ideas Correctly formatted bibliography Spelling and grammar are 85% correct and do NOT detract from the presentation and understanding of the subject matter Materials produced are engaging to the reader, creative and complete in their outcome Title is included and it correctly identifies topic Application Effectively demonstrates awareness of the Theory of Evolution as developed by Darwin by providing at least five pieces of CITED evidence supporting the thesis topic</p><p>Advice: Prepare your bibliography in advance.
