Independent Study/Directed Study courses may be approved by the State Approving Agency (SAA) for VA education benefits when the institution certifies to the criteria in paragraphs II and III below for Chapters 30, 32 and 33, under Title 38, and Chapters 1606 and 1607 under Title 10. For Chapter 35 students it must be part of a standard college degree.</p><p>II. CERTIFICATION OF INDEPENDENT STUDY: The undersigned certifies that all Independent Study courses offered by this institution and certified to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for educational benefits will meet the following criteria:</p><p>(A) School must be accredited at the college level by a nationally recognized accrediting agency.</p><p>(B) Consists of a prescribed program of study with provision for interaction either by mail, telephone or personally between the student and the regularly employed faculty of the university or college.</p><p>(C) Is offered without any regular scheduled, conventional classroom or laboratory sessions.</p><p>(D) Is not a cooperative course, a farm cooperative course, a correspondence course, or a graduate course consisting of research necessary for the preparation of the student’s Masters thesis, Doctoral dissertation or similar treatise.</p><p>III. CERTIFICATION BY INSTITUTION FOR REPORTING STUDENT STATUS.
