We will read novels and other works of fiction, as well as essays and critical articles, in order to discover how the mainstream imposes its views on each of the above categories by defining “beauty” to serve its interests. In addition to examining traditional texts, we will also look at images from popular culture in terms of how both females and males are portrayed as desirable and undesirable. In other words, the adjectives beautiful and ugly will emerge as one of a series of hierarchical binary oppositions embedded in—and serving—the status quo. Course Goals The course is designed to offer students the opportunity to develop a wide variety of skills, which include learning and applying rhetorical techniques from several theories of argument. Reading notes and quizzes ask students to read, write and think critically. The in-class essay encourages close readings and in-depth analyses. The mini-response paper and the longer final paper require students to apply cultural theories to literary works. Class discussions, group work and oral presentations help students teach, as well as learn from, each other. By the end of the semester, students should be able to write a well-supported literary analysis paper and know how to apply many critical strategies to any text. Course Policies Attendance I will grade more on actual participation rather than on mere attendance. However, because this course relies heavily on class discussion and because we cover a lot of material each class period, your attendance is very important. Everyone has three excused absences, which means that you needn’t tell me why you miss three classes. Each absence after three will lower your course grade five points. If you miss six class periods or more, you will fail the course. Therefore, it would be wise not to use up all three excused absences in the beginning of the semester. (You may record the dates of your absences here: _____, _____, _____. ) Lateness Since lateness is a distraction both to me and the rest of the class, I close the door once class has begun, which may be exactly at 12:30. Students may only enter the classroom if I open the door again after general announcements or a student presentation. If you cannot come on time, you will be counted late; for every three times that you are late, you will be counted absent. It is your responsibility to see me after class to sign the roll. If there is a structural reason for your lateness, e.g.; you have to walk across campus in 10 minutes, please see me immediately. (You may record the dates that you are late here: _____, _____, _____ ) Late assignments Reading notes, which must be typed, will only be accepted on the day that they are due. I do not accept late reading notes. Papers handed in after the due date will be penalized a letter grade for each day that they are late. If you are absent, you are expected to turn the work in on time. All assignments are due at the beginning of class even if, due to unusual circumstances, they must be emailed. If you cannot come to class and are having someone from the English department put your work in my mailbox, please ask her or him to note the time on your assignment. Special Arrangements If there are conditions which may affect your performance in this class, and which require special accommodations, please make an appointment to see me as soon as possible so that such arrangements can be made. Academic Integrity Academic dishonesty is a serious offense at any university. If I suspect you have presented someone else’s work as your own, I will report you to the Vice President of Student Affairs for disciplinary action, in which case you will be given an incomplete for the course until your case is resolved. Forms of academic dishonesty include: Collusion— lending your work to another person to submit as his or her own; Fabrication—deliberately creating false information on a Works Cited page; and Plagiarism—the presentation of another person’s work as your own, whether you mean to or not. Even if you put someone’s ideas into your own words, you must properly credit the source. Drop Policy If you withdraw from the course you must follow university procedures. It is your responsibility to execute these procedures correctly and within the deadlines. I cannot drop anyone from the course. Necessary Changes I have tried to make this document as complete and thorough as I possibly could. However, during the course of the semester I may be required to alter, add, or abandon certain policies and assignments. I reserve the right to make such changes as they become necessary. Student Responsibility I will abide by the policies stated in this syllabus. Each student is responsible for reading and understanding this document. I will be glad to clarify any sections a student does not understand. At the beginning of the second week, I will ask every student to sign a document saying that the syllabus has been read and understood so questions must be asked before that date. Bomb Threats If anyone is tempted to call in a bomb threat, be aware that UTA will attempt to trace the phone call and prosecute all responsible parties. Every effort will be made to avoid cancellations of presentations/tests caused by bomb threats. Unannounced alternative sites will be available for these classes. Your instructor will make you aware of alternate class sites in the event that your classroom is not available.</p><p>Course Requirements Grade Breakdown I. PREPARATION FOR PAPERS A. Presentations 20% (one during the semester; one of your paper) B. Participation 5% Satisfactory completion of every assignment is required to pass the class since each category evaluates a different skill. Students who fail more than two letter-numbered sections will fail the course. Writing Assignments Reading notes So that you do not let the reading material simply pass in one eye and out the other, I am asking you to do brief typed reading notes throughout the semester. (I will not accept notes that are not typed.) These will help you prepare for the papers and exams as well as the class discussions. Be ready to agree or disagree during group discussions. I want you to share your knowledge with the class. Sometimes I will ask you to read these aloud. I do not accept late reading notes. I. Respond to the following for a reading note on the literature: 1) Is there a scene or particular passage you would like to discuss? (Please indicate page numbers.) 2) Why? 3) How does this passage relate to the reading assignment as a whole, including the entire portion of the novel and the historical and/or theoretical material in the packet? a previous assignment? 4) Indicate any portions of the text that are unclear. 5) Conclude your note with one discussion-provoking question – that is, a question that has more than one answer – which pertains to the text. II. Respond to the following for a reading note on the non-fiction essays: 1) What are the article’s main points? List up to three. Be complete and thorough. 2) Do you agree with each of these points? Why, or why not? 3) Indicate any portions of the text that are unclear. 4) Apply it to the assigned literary work by referring directly to a passage in the essay and in the literature due for that day. If possible, choose a connection that relates to some aspect of “beauty.” 5) Conclude your note with one discussion-provoking question – that is, a question that has more than one answer – which pertains to the text.</p><p>Mini-Response Paper In this short paper, you will support your own significant interpretation of an assigned literary work in terms of a theoretical position that you have either read or heard presented in class. More detailed instructions will be given closer to the due date.</p><p>Final paper This paper will be longer, but similar to the mini-response. Again, it must go beyond class discussion to elucidate the complex relationship between the concept of beauty and American society’s power structure(s) as expressed in terms of class, race, gender, ethnicity, etc. by presenting a unique application of theory to one of the novels. I recommend having a working thesis – your own significant interpretation – before finding outside sources to support your argument. It will be four to five pages long, must have margins no larger than 1.25 inches and use standard 12 point font such as Times New Roman. It must also include a Works Cited page that satisfies MLA guidelines. </p><p>Make sure this paper is not a summary. Do not rehash what was said in class.</p><p>Even excellent insights may never be understood if they are buried beneath unintelligible words, phrases and sentences. Therefore, your final grade will take into account organization, use of transitions and mechanical skills such as grammar, spelling and punctuation. </p><p>Since page-length requirements demand a certain thoroughness, in addition to deducting 10 points for every day a paper is late, I will also take off 10 points each for short papers, improper fonts and margins that are too large. I may ask you to go to the Writing Center where you will get advice in revising your paper before you write your final draft. In that case, papers that are not turned in with documentation from the Writing Center, showing that you have had a tutoring session, will be given a zero. </p><p>The Writing Center The Writing Center, Room 411 in the Central Library, will assist you with any writing assignment while you are a student at UT-Arlington. During Fall 2010, the Writing Center’s hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Mon. through Thurs; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Fri.; and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sat. and Sun. You may schedule appointments online at www.rich37.com/uta, by calling 817 272-2601, or by visiting the Writing Center. If you come to the Writing Center without an appointment, you will be helped on a first-come, first-served basis as tutors become available. Writing Center tutors are carefully chosen and trained, and they can assist you with any aspect of your writing, from understanding an assignment to revising an early draft to polishing a final draft. However, the Writing Center is not an editing service; tutors will not correct your grammar or rewrite your assignment for you, but they will help you learn to solve your grammatical and organizational problems. </p><p>IMPORTANT: It is your responsibility to keep a copy of all your graded papers until after you receive your final grades from the university. Quizzes and Exams Announced reading quizzes will encourage you to keep up with the reading and thus have pertinent comments to add to class discussion. The in-class essays will allow you to demonstrate how well you are integrating the reading material and class discussions. Participation Your participation grade depends on the quality of your contributions to class discussions.</p><p>Presentation Respond to the following questions during your 5-10 minute presentation. Your grade depends upon the quality of the content, so feel free to choose what presentation style suits you. For example, you may want to sit in your seat, stand in front of the class, give a PowerPoint presentation, or use handouts. You must turn in your typed presentation notes to receive a grade. (On the day that you give a presentation, you are not required to turn in a reading note.)</p><p>Note: Include a brief biographical sketch of the author for both fiction and non-fiction works if you are the first to present on a work by that author. Do not simply read what you have gotten off the net (be sure to cite your source and indicate what is directly quoted). Try to find information about the author that relates to the work assigned.</p><p>Fiction: 1) How does the text state and or resist oppressive ideologies, (i.e.; cultural assumptions that deny privilege to certain groups), expressed through “beauty” if possible? Since we will be exploring just how “beauty” functions to maintain the dominant power structure, feel free to explore far out implications here. Specifically address two from the following list: culture, class, race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. Refer directly to the text. You may use direct quotes or paraphrase. (30 pts) 2) Apply the text to an element of pop culture; i.e. movie, advertisement, TV show, song, etc. In other words, what is the specific connection between how “beauty” functions in both the text and in contemporary American pop culture. Be creative!!! (10 pts) 3) Indicate any portions of the text that are unclear. (5 pts) 4) Can the text be applied to current events? If so, how? Use a specific quote from the text and the news article. (10 pts) 5) Add your own significant interpretation of the text – which could be a claim for a paper – and support it with at least three examples from the reading. Identify the type of critical strategy you have used. (30 pts) 6) Conclude your presentation with two discussion-provoking questions – that is, questions having more than one answer – which pertain to the text. (15 pts)</p><p>Non-fiction: 1) Briefly state at least three of the article’s main points. (15 pts) 2) How does the article support two of its major assertions about an issue relating to beauty? Present two supports for each claim. (20 pts) 3) Indicate those points that surprised you, as well as those that you strongly agree or disagree with. Explain. (10 pts) 4) Indicate any portions of the text that are unclear. (5 pts) 5) Can the text be applied to current events? If so, how? Use a specific quote from the text and the news article. (10 pts) 6) Apply the text to an element of pop culture; i.e. movie, advertisement, TV show, song, etc. In other words, what is the specific connection between how “beauty” functions in both the text and in contemporary American pop culture. Be creative!!! (10 pts) 7) Apply the reading to the literature assigned for that day, if possible. If not, apply it to a previous work of literature. Cite at least two specific passages in both that illustrate the connection. (20 points) 8) Conclude your presentation with two discussion-provoking questions – that is, questions having more than one answer – which pertain to the text.
