STUDENTS SHOULD PRACTICE ALL VOWEL AND CONSONANT SOUNDS / SYMBOLS OF THE INTERNATIONAL PHONETIC ALPHABET</p><p>STANDARDS Students will 1. Recognize and produce fifteen vowel sounds of American English with improved fluency. 2. Utilize IPA symbols for vowel sounds in order to distinguish among them. 3. Recognize and produce twenty-four consonant sounds of American English with improved fluency. 4. Utilize IPA symbols for consonant sounds in order to distinguish among them. 5. Consider and rehearse position of the tongue, teeth, and lips in production of bilabials, labio-dentals, fricatives and glides. 6. Grasp and employ more fluent pronunciation of –ed and –s endings.</p><p>II. STUDENTS SHOULD BE AWARE OF NUMBER OF SYLLABLES AND SYLLABLE STRESS WITHIN WORDS</p><p>STANDARDS Students will 1. Process syllables and syllable stress in multi-syllabic words. 2. Discern common patterns of stress in words. 3. Identify patterns of stress in the vocalization of certain numbers. 4. Recognize pronunciation of unstressed syllables in multi- syllabic words. 5. Predict stress in words according to parts of speech. III. STUDENTS SHOULD FOLLOW THE RULES AND PATTERNS OF INTONATION AND RHYTHM STANDARDS Students will 1. Regard falling intonation as indicative of information questions and statements. 2. Regard rising intonation as indicative of Yes/No questions, choices, and lists. 3. Detect rhythm in phrases and sentences.</p><p>IV. STUDENTS SHOULD DECIPHER CONNECTED SPEECH IN RAPID AMERICAN ENGLISH STANDARDS Students will 1. Note and connect common words and phrases. 2.
