Box 1602 Alabaster, AL 35007 [email protected]</p><p>The members of Psi Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. are pleased to announce the availability of two $1,000 scholarships for the fall of 2015 academic school year.</p><p>To qualify the applicant must: Be an African American female graduating from a high school in Shelby County, AL.</p><p> A college bound senior in the fall of 2015. </p><p> Possess a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale.</p><p> Be attending an accredited college or university in the fall of 2015.</p><p>All completed applications must include: An official, sealed high school transcript.</p><p> Two letters of recommendation from: 1 - A teacher, counselor, or school administrator 1 - A community member, civic or religious leader. A standard form one page essay based upon one of the following topics: a) If you had the ability to change your community in a positive way, what specific change(s) would you make? b) Describe how you have demonstrated leadership ability in your school, work, or community. c) Discuss a special attribute or accomplishment that set you apart from other students seeking to be awarded this scholarship.</p><p>Please type or print legibly and complete the attached application. Selection is based upon grade point average, academic potential, school and community involvement, as well as references. Alpha Kappa Alpha is the first Greek-letter sorority established and incorporated by African American college women. </p><p>Alpha Kappa Alpha is comprised of a nucleus of over 260,000 members in graduate and undergraduate chapters in the United States, the U. S. Virgin Islands, the Caribbean, Canada, Japan, Germany, Korea and on the continent of Africa. </p><p>Its membership is comprised of distinguished women who boast excellent academic records, proven leadership skills, and are involved in the global community through advocacy and service. Alpha Kappa Alpha has dedicated itself to improving the quality of life for citizens worldwide and promoting peace.</p><p>The goals of its program activities center on significant issues in families, communities, government halls and world assembly chambers. Its efforts constitute a priceless part of the global experience in the 21st century.</p><p>Since its founding over a century ago, Alpha Kappa Alpha’s mission has been to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of “Service to All Mankind.”</p><p>About Psi Xi Omega Chapter…</p><p>On January 16, 2007 a group of eager sorority members made contact with South Eastern Regional Director of Alpha Kappa Alpha regarding the formation of an interest group in Central Alabama. The group was sent a copy of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Procedures for the establishment of a Graduate Chapter and the journey to chartering a Shelby County chapter began….</p><p>In April of 2008 the group was visited by the South Eastern Regional Director and would later receive the official interest group application on October 15, 2008. On March 9, 2009 the group was approved as the Shelby County Pearls continued to work diligently towards chartering. On October 11, 2011 the group received final approval to charter as a chapter. The Shelby County Pearls Interest Group was chartered on November 26, 2011 and became Psi Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha.</p><p>Psi Xi Omega serves the entire Shelby County area. As women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, we strive to promote service to all mankind and to shine a light of hope on humanity. Moreover, we strive to let our beacons of light shine brighter and brighter each year with love, compassion, and respect for others.
