Assessment Guide Certificate II in Information Technology 28 三月 2002 Qualification Guide

NETWORK SETUP AND SUPPORT PROJECT.

Your group has been employed to provide a network solution to a small company. The small company will be represented by one of the faculty areas you have been allocated to. You will provide support in the following three areas :

Network Design: Network Design involves designing the layout and equipment which will be used by your small company. You will quote for cabling as well as the supply of hardware and software. You will also be expected to be knowledgeable about the ergonomics of the work environment and be able to make recommendations. Network Installation : Network Installation involves configuring and running the network server and workstations. You will be required to install a network operating system to a server, install an operating system to workstations. Install peripheral devices to the server and workstations and install application software to the workstations. Network Support : You will be expected to provide schedules for the daily running and maintenance of the network, including virus protection, backup, cleaning and care of the systems as well as the ergonomic setup of the workstations.

Please note: This is a simulation – you will not really install any network cabling nor will you be providing the staff with new computers. Please ensure that the staff are aware of this and don’t expect a new computer to be placed in their classrooms.

Network Design.

User Requirements

You will approach your faculty area and discuss their network requirements – each member of the faculty will receive their own computer and it shall be located as near as possible to the teacher’s desired location. You will need to know what software they would like to run, and where they would like their computer placed (in the staffroom or in their classroom). You should discuss issues like occupational health and safety as well as ergonomic issues. For example, is their desk big enough ? If they got a new desk and chair, where should it be put. Will the location of cables create a trip hazard for the user ? Is the lighting sufficient in their room. Is it drafty, noisy or poorly heated ? You will need to keep a record of this interview (perhaps a questionnaire), the user’s responses and your recommendations.

Network Layout

© Australian National Training Authority ICA20199 Page 1 of 12 Assessment Guide Certificate II in Information Technology 28 三月 2002 Qualification Guide Your first task will be to determine where the cables and computers will go. You will then calculate the cost of installation of this cable (see appendix I for details). You will price new computers for the staff as well as the cost of Operating System software, Network Operating software (Microsoft Server 2000) and one Office application (Other software is supplied and installed by the user). You will price new furniture if required. You should supply a cabling diagram showing where the computers, cables and wire closet (hub(s)) are located.

Network Installation

You will, for a period of two weeks, be given access to one Pentium III computer (server) and one Pentium 166 Computers (workstations), a printer, scanner, zip drive, network cabling and network hub. You will be provided with the following software: Windows2000 Sever, Windows98 and Microsoft Office 2000. You will configure the server, workstations, peripheral devices and software to simulate the setup you would provide the staff, if the resources were available.

Server

The server will run Windows2000 server and have 2 users configured for login – One administrator and one standard user. The users will each be given space for the storage of files on the server and will have access to the network printer attached to the server. An internet server will be configured on the server also using IIS which comes standard with Windows2000

Workstations

The workstations will be configured with Windows98 and Office 2000. They will be able to log into the network server and print to the server’s printer. One workstation will be configured with a scanner, the other with a zip drive. The scanner should have the appropriate drivers and software installed, while the Zip drive should be able to backup data from the server’s shared drive. Each computer should be able to view the server’s Web server through Internet explorer. The users should be able to save their office documents to the Server.

Timeline

Time is critical for this part of the assignment. You will be given only two weeks as all groups must have a turn in the work room on the equipment. If your group runs out of time during the two weeks, they may be given time at the end of the term to complete their task – however, it will be close to the examination period. This is a mission critical operation and groups falling behind will be expected to invest lunchtimes and time after school to complete the tasks in the allotted time.

© Australian National Training Authority ICA20199 Page 2 of 12 Assessment Guide Certificate II in Information Technology 28 三月 2002 Qualification Guide Network Support

You will be expected to provide schedules for the daily running and maintenance of the network, including virus protection, backup, cleaning and care of the systems as well as the ergonomic setup of the workstations.

You will provide this support as a series of documents which contain instructions (including pictures) as well as record sheets which may be filled out with signatures and dates as each task is completed. Ideas and an indication of the level of detail required for this task may be found in the textbook.

© Australian National Training Authority ICA20199 Page 3 of 12 Assessment Guide Certificate II in Information Technology 28 三月 2002 Qualification Guide

APPENDIX 1 – NETWORK DESIGN CONTRACT FORM This assessment contract has been negotiated between: Candidate’s name:______Assessor’s name: ______

Assessment project outline Assessment Evidence Monitoring/Feedback Dates Project Overview 1.0 Project Overview 1.0 Stage 1.0 Checkpoint Network Design involves designing the A Gannt chart is required for the overall Your group’s gannt chart should list the expected layout and equipment which will be project. Your teacher will have the pricing for most network components incluing patch panels, cabinets etc. An indication of the labour cost is given below.

Network Cabling in each of the faculty’s classrooms, wired from a central location (wire closet). Find the nearest hub Work out where the computers are going Measure the distance from the wire closet to each of the destinations – destination is nearest power point to teacher’s table. Note an extra meter is required at each end to allow for splicing of cables. A “patch cable” is required at each end. At the teacher’s end the cable should reach comfortably from the outlet to the teacher’s table (following wall if necessary to avoid a “trip hazard”). The cable at the “wire closet” end should be no shorter than one meter) Take into account the fact that you will have to follow the walls and make the cabling unobtrusive. It is better to use the same conduit wherever possible – so don’t simply choose the shortest distance between each location and use five different conduits – remember conduit is more expensive per meter than the network cable so put as much cable into the same conduit as possible). Take into account corners – the cable must reach all the way to the corner. Classrooms on different floors will have to be wired through the electricity cabinets/floor cavities (usually covered by wood) Work out the number of meters of cable and conduit required Two access points are provided at each location (one for a desktop and one for a laptop) Calculate how many access point boxes required (Dual Krone SMK2) Calculate how many points required in the “wire closet”. How many points will be required on the patch panel – therefore use a Krone 16 or Krone 24 patch panel A Wall mount frame (rack) will be required A “rack mount” network hub will be required which has sufficient capacity for your network (with a few points to spare in case of expansion). Draw a diagram Provide an itemised quotation (one quote only using prices from John R Turk) Take into account extras like screw, drill bits, rj-45 connectors) Add labour at $40/hour

Suggested labour times – total up then add an hour for setup/packup – take to nearest hour and round up. 2 runs of cable spliced to patch panels (regardless of length) – 1/2 hour Drill through brick wall – 15 minutes Drill through Plaster wall – 5 minutes 1 patch cable 10 minutes 1 run of conduit (> 2 meter) into brick/concrete – 1 hour 1 run of conduit (> 2 Meter) into plaster/wood -1/2 hour 1 run conduit (< 2 meter) into any surface – 15 minutes

Put it all into a spreadsheet/database (a spreadsheet will be much easier to deal with - though less flexible) then mail-merge into a word document for your final quote.

© Australian National Training Authority ICA20199 Page 11 of 12 Assessment Guide Certificate II in Information Technology 28 三月 2002 Qualification Guide

APPENDIX 5 : TEXT BOOK RESOURCES

The following text references will be of use to you

Project Stage 1.1 : Hamilton and Smith “ Fundamentals of System Administration” ; Chapter 5 “Determining Client Requirements”

Burton & Rossignol; Communicating in an IT environment; Chapter 5 “Dealing with Clients”

Project Stage 1.2 : Hamilton and Smith “ Fundamentals of System Administration” ; Chapters 6, 9 & 11

Project Stage 1.3 : Hamilton and Smith “ Fundamentals of System Administration” ; Chapters 12-15

© Australian National Training Authority ICA20199 Page 12 of 12
