Paul Wright Human Communication Studies 100 1-2:15, Monday & Wednesday, Spring 2004

REACTION PAPER 1

Choose and respond to one of the following prompts:

(1) The text characterizes the ideal communicator as one who (a) monitors his or her communication activity, (b) possesses a number of communication strategies, (c) has the ability to match strategy to situation, (d) skillfully performs the chosen strategy, (e) is empathetic, (f) is cognitively complex, (g) and committed to his or her interpersonal relationships (p. 20- 21). Think of a person with whom or a situation wherein you would like to improve your communication competency to meet a physical, identity, social, or practical need(s). Discuss how you might use what you have learned about communication competency to achieve your interaction goal. For example, you might make a conscious effort to monitor the amount of time you spend daydreaming in class to increase the likelihood of achieving a degree (practical need). You may write about a single person or instance, or multiple persons or instances. The structure of your paper should be as follows: -First, briefly depict the person or situation with whom or wherein you would like to achieve some interaction goal. -Second, briefly discuss the goal to be achieved and what need or needs it fulfills. -Third, provide a pithy explanation of how and why the applicable dimensions of communication competency would assist you in your endeavor(s).

(2) Recall that our perceptions consist of our awareness of what is taking place in our environment. How we interact with others depends largely on our perceptions of them. Unfortunately, our perceptions are selective. Describe an instance where you fell victim to each of the six perceptual tendencies listed on pages 34-37 and indicate how your newfound knowledge of perception formation might have prevented you from committing the interaction blunders you’ve described. The structure of your paper should be as follows: -First, briefly describe the situation where your perceptual tendencies got the better of you. -Second, discuss how knowledge could have been power in the particular situation described.
