Read the NASA article and annotate. </p><p>2. Read “All Summer in a Day” and annotate</p><p>3. Decode test questions from Newsela.</p><p>Materials: NASA article, “All Summer in a Day” August 22</p><p>Bell work: Word of the Day</p><p>Maya Angelou quiz</p><p>The students will:</p><p>1. Read the lyrics of the song, “Smile.” (To whom do you believe the author is writing this poem?)</p><p>2. Listen to the lyrics of the song. </p><p>3. Discuss the meaning of the song and how the author conveys the meaning through poetic devices.</p><p>4. Review poetic devices using the power point attached.</p><p>5. Read “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou.</p><p>6. In pairs, annotate the poem by pointing out poetic devices and figurative language.</p><p>7. Reading response (independent)</p><p>8. Read The Outsiders.</p><p>Materials: “Smile” “Still I Rise” Power point</p><p>Reading Response question: You have read, “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou. Explain the theme of the poem. Explain how the author uses poetic devices to convey the theme of the poem. Use specific examples from the poem to support your claim. August 23</p><p>Bell work: Word of the Day</p><p>Mini-lesson: review quiz</p><p>Activities </p><p>The students will </p><p>1. Read “Nothing Gold Can Stay.” </p><p>2. Write a thematic statement for the poem.</p><p>3.
