He tells a story of when he first noticed that other people acted like he couldn’t hear or talk. He begins the story by saying he was “about ten years old and . . . out in front of the shack sprinkling salt on salmon for the racks behind the house, when [he sees] a car turn off the highway and come lumbering across the ruts through the sage.” Tell as much of the rest of the story as you can remember. The black boy named Geever comes into the Chief’s and McMurphy’s room at eleven-thirty one night and wakes up both men when they hear what Chief describes as “a sound under my bed like a mouse with a walnut.” He leans “over the edge of the bed and [sees] the shine of metal” scarping under his bed. What’s going on here? What is Geever scraping at? Why is he doing it so late? What does McMurphy say and do when he wakes up to what’s going on?</p><p>3. When the Chief finally speaks, it is to McMurphy just after the incident referred to in the previous prompt. What do they talk about? </p><p>4. What role does a character named George Sorenson play in the fishing trip? Who is Candy?</p><p>5. Describe the inmates’ experiences with some of the people they encounter in the world outside the ward while on their fishing trip. Don’t just offer general assessments; give specific examples. </p><p>6. List 5 things you remember about the fishing trip that have not already been referenced in this quiz.
