Teaching Demonstration Criteria

Teaching Demonstration Criteria Northern Lights

*Presentations should not last longer than 15 minutes and judges are permitted to let entrants know that they should wrap up if they reach 15 minutes.

**Please remember that entrants are not expected to present an entire class but only a portion as time permits.

***Written document/handouts are not required and may be provided orally.

Presentation Skills (8 pts): Entrants seem at ease, speak clearly, and utilize gestures to emphasize points. In addition, entrants make good eye contact and engage the audience.

Knowledge of Topic (8pts): Entrants appear to have a firm grasp of the topic at the level they have documented (i.e. an entry-level class vs. a more advanced discussion), and show no hesitation in their knowledge of the demonstrated skill.

Organizational Structure (8pts): Presentation is logically organized with a clear beginning, middle, and end. If a technique is taught, there should be a clear starting and middle point with, at the very least, instructions provided for project completion.

Clarity of Instruction (8pts): Entrants properly explain the topic, define all terms, and clarify techniques so that a reasonable adult with little or no experience on the topic could gain new understanding.

Documentation (8pts): May be provided orally as a part of the presentation or as an informational handout. However, highest marks should be given for an entrant who provides a basic amount of evidence to back up their presentation.

Overall Impression (10 pts.): Entrant provides a well-rounded presentation and does an excellent job engaging the class and seems genuinely interested in the topic. Visual aids and handouts may add to “overall impression.”
