Locomotor Movement Cards Warm-Up

Locomotor Movement Cards Warm-Up

Locomotor Movement Cards Warm-up

Grades: 2nd – 5th (Can use with 1st if they are good readers)

Formation: Stations-divide class into 9 groups (one group per card)

Directions: The students use the symbols on the cards to locate their next destination. Students move from the symbol on their card to the card that has the same symbol. The card also tells the student how to move to that next card.

When the music begins, all students in their group perform the locomotor movement on their card until they get to the next card. (Once they are at that next card, they begin to perform the next locomotor movement and they continue moving to each card.) Even though the students started together with their group, they can begin to move at their own pace to the other cards —they don’t have to stay with their group.

You can stop the music during this activity and have the students perform exercises (eg. Jumping jacks, toe touches, etc). When the music begins again, students continue on their way to the next card. When the student returns to the card in which they began, they just start all over.

Safety: Since the students will be crossing through the center of the gym from different directions and different levels, they need to be aware of others to avoid collisions. Students who are at a low level (crawl and crabwalk) should have the right of way.
