<p>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 10, 2001</p><p>Retired Rear Admiral Sworn-in for VA's Top CIO Position WASHINGTON -- Retired Rear Admiral John A. Gauss, U. S. Navy, was officially sworn in today as the Assistant Secretary for Information and Technology (IT) for the Department of Veterans Affairs. As both the Assistant Secretary and Chief Information Officer, Gauss is the principal advisor to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs on information and technology management. The office provides advice and assistance to ensure that IT systems are acquired and information resources are managed properly. "He brings a proven record of success, extensive experience in the management of large, complex organizations and an abiding commitment to America’s veterans,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi. "I'm delighted to have someone of his quality as part of our team." Gauss, who retired from the Navy on June 30 after 32 years, is the former Commander of the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command. He directed the development, acquisition, and management of command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems for the U. S. Navy, plus selected Marine Corps and joint service programs. Gauss has also served as the Deputy Director of Engineering at the Defense Information Systems Agency, headquartered in Arlington, Va. Born in Salem, Mass., Gauss attended Cornell University, where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in engineering physics and was commissioned through the Navy Reserve Officer's Training Corps program in July 1969. </p><p>- More - Gauss 2/2/2/2</p><p>After commissioning, he had seven years of continuous sea duty, where he qualified as a Surface Warfare Officer. In 1976, he entered Naval Postgraduate School where he earned both a master's and a doctorate in electronic engineering with a minor in computer science. His military awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, three Legion of Merit awards, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.</p><p># # #</p>
