Guy Yamashiro </p><p>Guests: Gabriel S. Estrada – CHLS/AIS, Nancy Quam-Wickhem – HIST, Sarah Schrank – HIST, Cassandra Kao - AAAS</p><p>1. Approval of the minutes, February 20, 2007. (MSP w/corrections) Add Bede Ssensalo & Aaron Wilson B/ST to attendance roster Postpone ASAM 342 and CHLS 342 review until the next meeting, March 20th.</p><p>2. Announcements and/or Changes to the Agenda</p><p>3. New Business A) History Department 1) New Course: HIST 663 (2nd Read) Seminar in Latin American History (3 at C2) Discussion: Typo at top of SCO and syllabus (663 not 633) Typo – must match C5 seminar category Motion to approve HIST 663 passed (MSP) 2) Recertification: HIST 400I (2nd read) Category B3, D2 Coversheet says C1 – should be B3, D2 Add statement that future syllabi must conform to university attendance, withdraw and disability policies Deepen writing component discussion o Specify feedback program Remove “attendance is not mandatory” in SCO Add more active learning outcomes (“understanding” difficult to quantify) o Ex. Analyze, compare and contrast, synthesize, evaluate Method evaluation too specific; edit to allow for instructor flexibility Ex. “Suggested methods could be class participation ..” Move suggested ways for grade breakdown to SCO Ex. “Suggested …” to allow for instructor flexibility Send changes to Mark Wiley Motion to approve HIST 400I with recommended changes passed (MSP) B) Asian Asian-American Studies 1) New Course: CHIN 375 The Supernatural and Fantastic in Chinese Literature. Discussion Put standard statement in SCO that future syllabi must conform to university attendance, withdraw and disability policies Add wording to allow flexibility in grading scale Course Objectives & Measurable Outcomes #1 in Method of Assessment split into a separate outcome o Ask what they are going to synthesize Consider rewriting catalog requirements in the future Motion to approve CHIN 375 with recommended changes passed (MSP)</p><p>2) New Course: CHIN 421 Newspaper and Web Reading. 3 units at C4 Discussion Deeper discussion of hybrid course needed in SCO and syllabus Add wording to allow for instructor flexibility in Methods of Assessment Catalog description needs to be more detailed o Explain nature of instruction and what the course does or provides as opposed to just reading Chinese newspapers Outline needs more detailed lecture topics Motion to approve CHIN 421 postponed</p><p>C) American Indian Studies and Chicano and Latino Studies 1) New Course: AIS 315 and CHLS 315 Contemporary Indigenous Peoples of Aztlan and Latin America , 3 units at C5 Discussion Catalog description needs to mention cross-listing Not a GE course Methods of Assessment – break 60% No prerequisites – technically a sophomore can take this course Specify who course is geared for. o Is it advanced study or an introductory course? o Remove “advanced” or change prerequisites o Standard language is “upper division standing” or “consent of instructor” Send changes to Mark Wiley Motion to approve AIS 315 and CHLS 315 with changes passed (MSP)</p><p>E) Religious Studies a) New Course/s: RST 458/558: Women, Religion and the Developing World. 3 units at a C4. GE request for IC, D2, Global and Human Diversity. Discussion Global and Human Diversity are not allowed at the same time o Recommend Global Can not have a graduate course offered for GE credit Methods of Assessment grading breakdown high – consider revising If a graduate course, you need more analysis/advanced work o Critical evaluation, analysis, synthesis If a graduate course, specify how graduate course is different Too many course objectives o Decide what you can do in one semester Department needs to be consulted regarding GE or graduate status Motion to approve RST/458/558 postponed</p><p>4.
