WWI Veterans to Be Honored

<p> Department of Veterans Affairs 2501 W. 22nd Street Sioux Falls, SD 57117-5046</p><p>Department of NEWS RELEASE Veterans Affairs FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: Shirley Redmond, Public Affairs Officer FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 605-333-6889</p><p>September 6, 2007</p><p>Their Sacrifice – Our Freedom Former Prisoners of War to be Recognized</p><p>The Sioux Falls Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, the VA Dakotas Regional Office, and the Siouxland Chapter of the American Ex-Prisoners of War announce recognition of area former prisoners of war (POWs) on September 15, 2007. The public is invited and encouraged to participate to recognize these heroes.</p><p>A program to honor all area former POWs will take place at Lincoln High School at 10:30 a.m. Colonel Leo K. Thorsness, Medal of Honor recipient, and POW for six years in North Vietnam, will be the keynote speaker. The American Legion chorus will also present musical selections.</p><p>There are currently 63 surviving former POWs in South Dakota. Ninety five percent of them are World War II veterans, and five percent are Korean War veterans. There are currently no Vietnam veteran former POWs residing in South Dakota (Colonel Thorsness lives in Arizona). In addition, 10 former POWs reside in southwestern Minnesota and 23 in northwestern Iowa. Nationally, it is estimated there are over 25,000 former POWs living today. </p><p>Area residents are also invited to visit a traveling exhibit, “Behind Barbed Wire: Midwest POWs in Nazi Germany,” from 2-5 p.m. at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center. This exhibit is from the TRACES Center for History and Culture – a WWII history museum in St. Paul, MN.</p><p>In addition, as part of an initiative called Homefront South Dakota, South Dakota Public Broadcasting (SDPB) will tape memories of those who lived through the war years, including both veterans and their family members. To schedule a time, please contact Shirley Redmond, Public Affairs Officer, at the Sioux Falls VA.</p><p>To culminate the day’s events, SDPB is hosting a premiere party for THE WAR, Ken Burns documentary about World War II, at 7:00 p.m. in the VA Medical Center auditorium.
