1) on Graph Paper, Draw a Coordinate System That Is Centered on the Sheet

CUBISM CLUES

Directions: 1) On graph paper, draw a coordinate system that is centered on the sheet.

2) Use the clues below to draw the function described on your coordinate system. Choose 10 out of the 15 clues to graph. Label each graph with the clue number in a circle and an arrow pointing to the sketch.

3) Write the equation of the graph on your coordinate plane in the table provided. When appropriate name the x – intercepts, y – intercepts, and any relative extrema (maximums or minimums) of the graph.

Clue Number Clue 1 y = mx + b where m < 0 and b > 0. 2 An absolute value function that shifts left and has a vertical shrink. 3 An absolute value function that reflects and has a vertex in the first quadrant. 4 A quadratic function that has 2 rational roots. 5 A function whose range is {y|y ≥ -2} 6 A function whose domain is {x|x ≥ 4} 7 f(x) =ax2+bx+c and f(x) has an axis of symmetry at x = 5. 8 A quadratic function that has 2 negative roots. 9 A quadratic function where b2-4ac < 0. 10 A circle in the 2nd quadrant. 11 A circle with radius > 2 whose center is on the x or y axis. 12 A cubic function that rises to the left and falls to the right. 13 A cubic function that has 3 real rational roots. 14 A square foot function that has a horizontal or vertical shift. 15 A reciprocal function with a vertical asymptote of x = 3.

Some hints: 1) You can write a quadratic or cubic function in factored form with its roots – then multiply it out to find the equation. EX: f(x) = (x - 2)(x – 3) has roots 2, 3 and the standard form of the equation is f(x) = x2 – 5x + 6.

2) Once you have your equation use the table in your calculator to plot points on your graph to make your sketch precise.

3) Use your calculator to find the maximum, minimum, x and y intercepts once you have the equation if you need to.

4) Make it beautiful if you want to get recognized on the wall!
