Objective for Student will measure the density of certain objects. Students Once the density is measured, the students will determine whether each object is buoyant in water. NOTE ALL 5 E’s WILL NOT BE DONE IN ONE DAY. Engage In a container of water, drop a penny, marble, paper boat, and cork. Before dropping the objects, Date: 08/19 students will predict which items will float. Students, in groups of four, will be provided with three spheres that have the same volume. The spheres will be made of foam, wood, and metal. Students will use a calculator, ruler, and balance Explore scale to calculate the mass, volume, and density of each sphere. Students will log the results in a Date: 08/20 table provided by the teacher. Once the measurements are determined, students place each sphere in a container of water to establish which items are buoyant. Assess: The completed table. Read and discuss pages 286-287 of the Scott Foresman Science Textbook. Explain Explain that density is the amount of matter in a given object. It is calculated by dividing the mass of an object by its volume. Given the density of water, which is 1.0g / ml, a fact that will be Date: 08/21 provided by the teacher, the students will be able to know if an object will sink or float in water, based on its density. Using the projector, the teacher will introduce the Gizmo on density. In the computer lab, the Extend students will work in pairs to complete the student exploration worksheet. Date: 08/22-23 Assess: The completed student exploration worksheet. Evaluate: Student exploration worksheet and the Gizmo online mini-quiz. Date: 08/23 Supplies and Containers, water, metal sphere, foam sphere, wood sphere, ruler, balance scale, calculator, Technology computer, projector, marble, cork, and penny. Needed Vocabulary Density, mass, volume, and buoyancy. Homework: Students will complete the student exploration worksheet from Gizmo.
