Ch 3: Origins of Self Knowledge: Youtube Clip

Chapter 3: Origins of Self Knowledge YouTube clip

Show students the following two videos:

A. The most interesting man in the world commercial: www.youtube.com/watch? v=8Bc0WjTT0Ps

B. A commercial for the Sex and the City 2 movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=dLfrBIqDgcI

Explanation: Both videos portray individuals being adventurous, but at the same time demonstrate differences in stereotypes about the independent vs. interdependent nature of men and women. In video A, the target character is a man who is portrayed as adventurous and interesting because he does a lot of cool things by himself. In video B, the target characters are women who are portrayed as adventurous and interesting because they do a lot of cool things together as a group. This illustrates (a) media portrayals of independent vs. interdependent stereotypes concerning men and women, and (b) that independence and interdependence are traits that vary within the same culture, as well as between cultures.
