Stephanie Roberson said she would not mind and we all were in favor of her taking this position.

Maranda Thornburg agreed to act as secretary and take minutes.

All members will be approved by the PTSA at Thursday’s meeting.

Our primary goals are the School Improvement Plan and the School Safety Plan

The good news – we met our goals as a school last year and showed growth and we had great performance compared to the state average in gaps between target groups.

We are an A+ school, but we still have things to improve upon.

The goals in our SIP were discussed with specifics and identified as CMS goals or school specific goals.

The Advisory team and the Health teacher supports some of the goals. Math uses summer projects as well as language arts and LA implements vocabulary and stem studies to increase reading skills. IB literacy is a district goal as well as strategies for reading complex texts and practicing critical thinking skills.

We now have an ESL teacher assigned to our school. She will be using and teaching SIOP strategies to help with this target group.

We are implementing the 8th grade community service project – Reddig spoke to this with details on how the formatting and logistics of the 8th grade plan works. THE School Improvement Plan is a living document and is visited often and can be revised. (the document was passed around for members to sign – A copy had been shared with all members prior to the meeting).

The Safety plan was also shared with the committee members. Document was reviewed with committee and revisions were explained.

6th Grade – Will take their first field trip in a few weeks and the design cycle is being introduced. Still working with students on how to be “middle school” students.

7th Grade – Also beginning Design Cycle introductions. Amazing race field trip scheduled for 10/22. Working this year with parents to help raise money to support the Washington DC trip. Fund raising event will kick off this Friday. Working on Team building skills.

8th Grade – Trip to Cherokee is October 16th. Also Reddig shared information on the Be There Dad program that is a school wide imitative.

Parent concern – Students should have more opportunity to use their lockers. Some kids are carrying too much weight around for too much of their day. This is something we will address through advisory/counselors and help support students in time management and finding ways to carry less on their backs.

Parent concern shared from Irwin Elementary parents who had questions about the criteria for honors courses – clarification was given at the meeting and Barone will follow up with principal at Irwin.

Meeting ended at 8:35am
