Dafoe Book Prize for Let the Eastern Bastards Freeze in the Dark: The West versus the Rest Since Confederation, published by Alfred A. Knopf Canada.</p><p>In making its selection, the Jury noted that “Mary Janigan's Let the Eastern Bastards Freeze in the Dark examines the extended struggle between the West and Ottawa for control of the rich resources of western Canada. Combining scholarly research with an accessible style, Janigan offers a fresh historical perspective on an enduring tension that is as significant to today's Canada as it was to the Canada of John Dafoe.”</p><p>Mary Janigan’s work was selected from 42 submissions and a short list of 5 books.</p><p>The Prize will be formally awarded at the J.W. Dafoe Foundation’s Book Prize Dinner on May 15 in Winnipeg.</p><p>The J.W. Dafoe Book Prize is awarded to the best book on Canada, Canadians, and/or Canada’s place in the world published in the previous calendar year.</p><p>The Prize memorializes John Wesley Dafoe, one of the most significant Canadian editors of the 20th century.
