Agribusiness Accountability Initiative

Session 11: Economic Growth

Agribusiness Accountability Initiative (AAI)

"Supply Management in Support of Rural Livelihoods under the WTO"

This session will permit farmers’ representatives and others to describe the experience of supply management on both domestic and international markets, with a view to exploring the aims and history of this policy, its successes and challenges. They will draw the common threads between Northern and Southern experience.

Supply management is a long-established set of methods used to reduce imbalances between supply and demand on agricultural markets, enabling farmers to participate more securely in those markets. Farmers and agricultural workers throughout the world are more and more directly affected by fluctuations in market prices. Their integration in world markets is much more likely to succeed if they have the possibility of smoothing out those fluctuations. However, both technically and politically this is not always easy to achieve.

The panel, invited from Africa and elsewhere in the Global South, as well as North America and Europe, will discuss supply management in the light of various topics which are addressed under the Doha Round: the African Group’s proposal on commodities, the future role of state trading enterprises and the Cotton Initiative.

Moderator: Mr. Thomas Lines, Agribusiness Accountability Initiative

Mr. Samuel Asfaha, Project Officer on Commodities, South Centre, Geneva Mr. Alex Danau, Collectif Stratégies Alimentaires, Brussels Mr. Bhaskar Goswami, Forum for Biotechnology and Food Security, New Delhi Ms. Laurent Pellerin, Président, Union des Producteurs Agricoles, Quebec Mr. Saliou Sarr, Coordinateur, Réseau des Organisations Paysannes et des Producteurs Agricoles de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
