0 Conditional: If + Present simple + Present tense - If you heat water to 100ºC, it boils. Refers to something which is always true or which always happens. 1st Conditional: If + Present tense + (simple or continuous) Future tense / or imperative - If I miss the bus, I’ll take a taxi. Se usa para indicar que algo se cumplirá con seguridad (future tense) si la condición también se cumple (present tense). Possible situation.

2nd Conditional:

- If I had more time, I’d study German. (Si tuviese más tiempo, estudiaría alemán). - If you travelled, you would meet many people. If Past tense + would - If she were older, she would get the job. (TO BE), (Si fuese más mayor, + + conseguiría el trabajo). (past simple or past infinitive continuous) - If I were you, I would talk to him about his problem. (PARA DAR CONSEJOS: Si yo fuera tú, hablaría con él de este problema). - If you rested for a couple of days, you’d feel better. - If I were not working tomorrow, I’d go with you.

Se usa para expresar condiciones hipotéticas referidas al presente o al futuro, es decir, · que podrían tener lugar pero es poco probable que lleguen a término (If I won the lottery …); · para expresar situaciones imaginarias (If I could come back in another life, I would …). En estos casos incluso podemos prescindir de la “if clause” y utilizar sólo “would / wouldn’t + infinitive”, e.g. My ideal holiday would be a week in the Bahamas, or I’d never buy a car as big as yours.; · para dar un consejo, siempre empieza If I were you …, (but never say If I was you).

Variante del 2nd Conditional:

- If I were older, I could drive. - If I were stronger, I might dare him. If + Past Simple + could / might + base form - If you studied, you could/ might get good results. (Si estudiaras, podrías conseguir/ tal vez conseguirías buenos resultados).

La probabilidad de que la hipótesis se cumpla es todavía menor que si se usa would (= tal vez, quizás).

1
