ELL Strategies: On chart paper, write Ben is painting a picture of his dad now. Underline I can use the text to make predictions is painting. Explain that is painting means that the action is happening right now. Rewrite the sentence: Ben is going to paint the picture later. Explain that is going to paint shows the action will happen in the future. Have children read pages 5 and 7 again. Help them identify the present progressive sentences on page 5 and the future sentence on page 7</p><p>Before Reading Vocabulary: High Frequency—today, Phonics/Mechanics: Digraph sh teacher, paint ,ship Content Vocabulary—sailor (Develop meaning) Show pictures Comprehension Strategy: Make predictions from text, pictures and title</p><p>Activate/Build Background Knowledge: Show cover of book. The title of this book is called Ben’s Dad. I’m thinking that the boy’s name is Ben. I wonder why? Ben’s dad is wearing a uniform? What kind of uniform do you think it is? Let’s make some predictions. Read to page 8. What do you think Ben’s dad is? During Reading Using appropriate Guided reading strategies, students will be reading at their own pace and teachers will be listening to students read, monitoring, giving feedback, taking anecdotal notes and running records.</p><p>Attend to Comprehension Within, Beyond, & About the text: After Reading Within the Text—What was happening that Ben was so excited about? What did he do at school? Who comes to school to pick up Ben? What does Ben’s dad do when he sees him? </p><p>Beyond the Text—How do you think Ben feels about his dad? What makes you say that? Who else besides his teacher do you think Ben told about his dad? When Ben’s dad picks him up how do you think he feels? Why? How do you think his dad feels? Why does he feel this way?</p><p>Comprehension—By looking at the title, the pictures and the text we can make predictions about what we think the story is about and what will happen. In this story We looked at the cover and realized that Ben’s dad wore a uniform. The uniform could be a policeman, a sailor or maybe even a postman. We made some predictions. When we got to page 8 -9 we could confirm out prediction because Ben drew a picture with a ship and his dad. It also said in the words on page 11 that he takes care of the engines on the ship. We should always check and confirm our predictions or they just become guesses. Predicting and confirming our predictions is an important strategy that good readers use.</p><p>Phonics-- On page 11 we read the word “ship” We also see the /sh/ in the word shouted on page 2. “sh” says /sh/ Let’s think of some other words that have the /sh/ sound. I will say some words. Put your thumbs up if it begins with /sh./ sound. Put your thumbs down if it does not begin with /sh/</p><p>High Frequency—see attached sheet</p><p>Attend to Comprehension Within, Beyond, & About the text: Content Core Integration:(Science, Soc. Can students make because______and confirm predictions based on title, text and pictures? Or I’m sad today because ______</p><p>Phonics—Can students recognize and hear the /sh/ sound. Note as students sort pictures into piles. If students can hear the “sh”, progress to words beginning with “sh” to read.</p><p>High Frequency—Can students recognize words in connected text? In isolation? Note on oral record of reading or running record. Practice daily on word wall.</p><p>Social Studies—Can students verbalize characteristics of Ben and his Dad’s relationship? Look at Beyond text questions. *Not all activities will be done in each lesson. Some lessons may take multiple days to complete. However, all students should be reading each time you meet.</p>
