Remote Desktop Access Test Session 1 28th September 2009

Organisation: 1. Session at SMU setting up the NDT PC and testing remote VPN access with local PC; 2. TT continuing the test remotely from home with assistance from PC at SMU.

Summary: 1. VPN connection set up to SMU network from home laptop running windows XP & using XP connection wizard (see VPN setup guide); 2. Home laptop VPN connection established and logon file activated to connect to NDT02 laptop in the NDT lab at SMU; 3. Home laptop used with two screens to show both the remote desktop window and the local desktop window in the other; 4. The DeltaVision software package was activated showing stress measurement in coloured glass using a DeltaTherm FPA infrared camera; 5. Pre-recorded data files used to test usage of analysis software;

6. Exercise repeated with home PC running Windows Vista.

Findings: 1. VPN connection set up easily on both PCs using XP and Vista; 2. With VPN connection activated, remote access to the NDT laptop was established using a Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) file identifying that PC; 3. This means that students can be provided with a general purpose VPN connection to the SMU Network in an appropriate domain, and then be emailed with the RDC file they need for the particular NDT PC needed for the experiment; 4. It is a straightforward matter to switch from remote PC access to local PC access by arranging them in different windows and toggling between them; 5. Ideally, the students should have access to twin screens for maximum flexibility and the ability to view multiple windows. However, it is also possible with one (preferably large) screen; Remote display of NDT software:
