MARYLAND BOARD OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PRACTICE 55 Wade Ave., Benjamin Rush Bldg., Baltimore, MD 21228, Phone (410) 402-8560

To: Maryland Occupational Therapy Licensees Sponsors of Continuing Education Programs

From: Donna Ashman, Executive Director

Date: February 5, 2009

Re: Continuing Competency Requirement - News

The Maryland Board voted to participate in the AOTA Approved Provider Program by accepting courses offered by AOTA Approved Providers effective 2/1/09.

The Board will accept courses offered by AOTA Approved Providers as approved for continuing education by the Maryland Board of Occupational Therapy Practice.

Therefore, AOTA Approved Providers need not seek separate or additional course approval from the Maryland Board of Occupational Therapy.

In addition, licensees who have participated, or will participate, in courses offered by AOTA Approved Providers during the current continuing competency requirement cycle (1/1/08-12/31/09), need not seek separate or additional course approval from the Maryland Board of Occupational Therapy.

Participants will need only to retain a copy of the certificate of completion as documentation verifying completion of approved contact hours.

In addition to participating in the AOTA Approved Provider Program, The Maryland Board of Occupational Therapy will continue to provide reviews of individual courses submitted by course sponsors for a fee of $30/course or for licensees at no additional fee.

However, the Board will review only those courses related to occupational therapy principles and procedures as defined in the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 10.46.04.02(7). While a licensee has the option of accruing up to 8 contact hours through occupational therapy role-related activities as defined in COMAR 10.46.04.02(9), the Board will not provide the service of a review or pre-approval for these programs. This means that licensees can take role related courses without approval and claim 8 contact hours max, but in the event of an audit, the licensee must provide the required documentation and should be prepared to justify the basis for approving the activity for continuing education credit. The Board may or may not accept the activity.

To identify AOTA Approved Providers or individual courses approved by the Maryland Board, access www.mdotboard.org and click on Continuing Education. Links to the AOTA Approved Providers, the Board’s Pre-approved Courses, as well as contact hour approval forms can be found at the bottom of the page.

If you have any questions, or need any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me at 410-402-8558. Thank you.

D:\Docs\2017-12-14\0d36f9581b1c2fc4b2473a7f1122226f.doc
