<p> HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</p><p>REQUEST FOR INTERIM STUDY PROPOSAL</p><p>DATE: May 27, 2009</p><p>BY REPRESENTATIVE(S): Rep. Mike Jackson, Rep, Lee Denney,</p><p>TOPIC OF THE PROPOSAL:</p><p>Music Therapy in Oklahoma</p><p>EXPLANATORY COMMENTS ON THE SCOPE OF THE STUDY PROPOSAL:</p><p>1. The Cost-Effectiveness of Music Therapy as a viable part of the interdisciplinary team approach. a. Music Therapy can be utilized with other treatment disciplines to increase the cost-effectiveness of services and increase the evidence-based outcomes of treatment objectives. i. Communication: Enhanced auditory processing, retraining of speech processes. ii. Cognitive Skills: Improved academic skills, increased attention, improved cognitive and intellectual functioning (i.e. memory, sequencing of activities of daily living, and observation skills. iii. Motor Skills: Improved symmetry of gait, range of motion and integration of sensory input and coordination. iv. Social and Emotional Skills: Improved behavior, identification of emotional stimuli, and integration of social pragmatics.</p><p> b. Music Therapy can bypass the communication & emotional barriers observed in other therapies. c. The psychoacoustic components of sound are effectively applied for desired human psychophysiological functioning. d. Music Therapy coverage within Medicaid and State Funding Programs currently in place in other states: Arizona, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin</p><p>2. Increasing Music Therapy availability and resources in the state of Oklahoma</p><p> a. State Recognition of Music Therapy as a therapeutic intervention.</p><p>FILE IN CHIEF CLERK’S OFFICE PROPOSAL NUMBER 09-023______b. Revision of the State of Oklahoma job description for Music Therapy to align with standards of practice as per the American Music Therapy Association education guidelines. c.
