<p>Title: Helping Pregnant Women Quit Smoking: Best Practice Interventions for Community Health Workers</p><p>Course Description: Tobacco use is one of the most preventable causes of poor pregnancy outcomes and is associated with maternal, fetal, and infant morbidity and mortality. This presentation will describe the adverse effects of smoking and secondhand smoke on the mother and baby as well as examine effective recommendations for cessation. The speaker will highlight the important role that community health workers and other public health professionals can play in helping pregnant women quit smoking.</p><p>Continuing Education Unit: 1</p><p>CHW Competency: 0.5 Knowledge, 0.5 Communication</p><p>Length of Lesson: 50 minutes</p><p>Learner Centered Objectives:</p><p>1. Participants will describe the adverse effects of smoking on the mother, her unborn child, and family.</p><p>2. Participants will discuss the effectiveness of prenatal smoking cessation interventions.</p><p>3. Participants will compare three Best Practice interventions for smoking cessation.</p><p>Learner Centered Outcomes:</p><p>1. When participants return to their workplace, they will ask the pregnant women they provide services for, about current tobacco use and exposure.</p><p>2. When participants return to their workplace, they will assist the patient who is interested in quitting by providing cessation information.</p><p>3. Introduction and Data 5 minutes  Introduction of workshop and trainer.  Questions audience has about topic.  Review tobacco use rates and prevalence. II. Tobacco 101 10 minutes  Types of tobacco (smokeless, cigarettes).  Chemicals.  Mainstream smoke and Sidestream smoke. III. Adverse effects of Tobacco Use 10 minutes  Effects of tobacco use on the mother.  Effects of tobacco use on family members.  Effects of tobacco use on the unborn baby.  Effects of tobacco use on the newborn.</p><p>Objective 2 Participants will discuss the effectiveness of prenatal smoking cessation interventions.</p><p>IV. Interventions for Smoking Cessation 10 minutes  Clinical Interventions  Five A’s  Brief Motivational Interviewing  Pharmacotherapy  Quit Line/Telephone Counseling</p><p>Objective 3 Participants will compare three Best Practice interventions for smoking cessation.</p><p>V. Best Practice Interventions 10 minutes  Why use Best Practice  Effectiveness of reviewed interventions; compare and contrast  Identify next steps to utilize with clients VI. Educational and Cessation Resources; 5 minutes Wrap up  Tips for Quitting  Web-based resources  Telephone based resources  Educational materials</p>
