You will learn about family life, housing, business, games and entertainment, food and dining. In the process, you will be introduced to fundamental Latin grammar, vocabulary, and usage, which will enable you to read and understand texts (stories) about the various topics. In addition to our study of the Latin language, we will also study Latin roots and derivatives that appear in English and modern languages, like Spanish, French, and German; we will study Roman history and culture and its considerable impact on our own Western civilization (e.g. history, art, politics, philosophy, etc.). This course, then, will offer not only an excellent foundation in the Latin language, but will also help you appreciate the value of studying Latin in our modern world. The class will meet three days a week and will cover the first nine chapters of the Cambridge Latin Course, Unit 1 textbook.
