<p> Information for Starting a Free Clinic</p><p>For those interested in starting a free clinic, the process can be daunting. This document is designed to organize and categorize different tasks that must be undertaken.</p><p>Building your Team:</p><p> Recruit a board of directors and a physician to act as a medical director  Develop subcommittees to tackle certain goals</p><p>Assessing Community Needs:</p><p> Identify your target population  Identify the healthcare needs of the population you plan to serve . Medical (urgent and episodic and/or primary care) . Dental . Mental Health . Prescription Assistance . Hearing or Vision Screening</p><p>Identifying Current Services:</p><p> What other organization provide assistance to your target population?  Are there other free clinics, FQHCs, or private practices seeing the uninsured?  How much need is there in proportion to services available?</p><p>Networking: </p><p> Visit a nearby free clinic and clinics that operate in a model you wish to assume  Contact local hospitals and medical practices that may provide laboratory testing, radiology services and except referrals for your patient population  Use the resources of Free Clinics of MI and the National Assoc. of Free Clinics</p><p>Financing:</p><p> While grant money is one means of support, it is important to look to your local community for sustained contributions to you project  Develop a detailed budget and plan for fund raising</p><p>Legal Issues:</p><p> A free clinic needs to be identified as a nonprofit with 501(c)(3) status to apply for grants and other funding.  In Michigan, a license is required to solicit charitable donations.  Determine the need for liability and insurance coverage </p>
