Due to this, studies have been made to see if there is any link between cyber bullying and social network sites. Even though face book isn’t promoting cyber bullying but providing a path way to it is providing a link to cyber bullying. In particular these sites are increasing cyber bullying. They also don’t have sufficient ways of protecting teens. Lastly the more time people spend online the more they are at risk for cyber bullying. However many believe that it isn’t these sites creating a link it’s the teens choosing to use these sites.

As mentioned earlier the more time teens spend online the more they are at risk. This truly showing the link social networking has to cyber bullying. The survey of more than 900 teens ages 12 to 17, conducted by the Pew Research Foundation's Internet Project, also found that the more time that kids spend online, the more likely they are to experience "cyber bullying." The results also showed that users of social network sites such as MySpace and Face book were more than twice as likely to be harassed online as those who didn't log on to those sites(Wykes). The fact is the more time teens spend on these sites is increasing cyber bullying. Many haven’t seen the connection between the two. Actions need to be made to decrease this rate. “Our laptops, webcams, and cell phones” can be wonderful tools for helping us connect with one another but

“they can also be the most terrible of weapons” (Was the Internet to blame ?).

Nyuma 3

In addition many sites have no efficient ways of protecting teens. Teens are able to say whatever they want on many social networking sites; this providing a big link or pathway for teens to cyber bully their fellow teens online. One of these sites is face book. “Applications like face books honesty box allow users to post anonymously so they can say whatever they want without having to stand behind their words”(Lundsten). Social networking has no efficient way of protecting the youth. Instead of doing something about this, social networking is rather telling parents and guardians what they should do and whom they should talk to. There is really not enough action being made. The less protection we have the more its becoming an issue of cyber bullying. Many law makers are now enforcing laws that can help against the bullies but not prevent it.

In conclusion cyber bullying has increased over the years. One of the most recent deaths of

Tyler clementi has recently hit America increasingly. He was humiliated online when his roommates posted a video of him coming out about his sexuality. For this he killed himself by committing suicide. These numbers are increasing throughout the years. The internet can bring out a certain thing in people who otherwise wouldn’t say something like that if not the internet.

Due to the increase it is dramatically affecting the victims. Most of the reason why this is happening is because of the online sites in which we are presented to. Overall these three main factors are showing ways that cyber bullying is connected or linked to social networking. For the most part there can be a difference on how Americans deal with this. In the end a lot of teens are taking their lives because of cyber bullying. Many of us have been cyber bullied and understand how much pain it can bring. The reality of how cyber bullying and

Nyuma 4 social networking is connected is a fact in which many know. To better society, Americans must know the ways they are linked to cyber bullying to better prevent deaths like Tyler Clementi.

. Works cited

Nyuma 5

Lundsten, Apryl.
