Comment

Comments on additional issues identified in section 4.2 of the Discussion Paper Section/page no. Comment

Hatchmen I have been working in the stevedoring industry for 16yrs and unfortunately have seen plenty of preventable injuries - that is always one accident closer to a fatality.

The hatchman has personally saved myself and comrades plenty of times. You take your eyes off the hook for a second & you nearly lose a finger, or worse, you’re crushed.

In 2005 I was working a scrap metal job when the ropes gave way & 23ton of scrap came down, just missing myself and another workmate.

The hatchman could see it coming and gave us the 5 seconds warning to get out of the way. We were only meters from not going home to our families.

The hatchman is essential to any ship were men are working below it cannot be counted in dollars but only in the men they may save one day.

Stevedoring Should the guidance material refer to the qualifications that have been qualifications developed for stevedoring? Yes.

Safety Induction Should the newly developed stevedoring safety skill-set be used to underpin skill-set safety inductions? Every new member should have the basic skills in safety & training. I think it’s a great idea.

Use of checklists Should the safety checklists, which set out examples of the types of hazards, and acceptable/unacceptable ways of handling those hazards, be maintained in the guidance material? The point of these checklists are a great idea they will become ingrained in the industry. Comments on the implementation of the national guidance material in each jurisdiction which may have included launches, information and training sessions, and whether it has been useful in the workplace as a resource for improving safety practices.
