AKT and When to Take It

AKT and When to Take It

AKT and when to take it? Context The pass mark of the AKT varies depends upon the performance of the candidates so who takes it, and when will make a difference to the pass mark. There is some discussion understood to be happening at college level about restricting the number of attempts allowed at AKT (the statistics suggest that improvement after the 4th attempt is rare.) General information on passing the AKT is available on the deanery site at http://www.yorksandhumberdeanery.nhs.uk/general_practice/documents/AKTResour cesNationalV5.09.doc

General consensus Nobody is recommending that you should take until you have done at last 6m in General Practice. Do not take it until you have had time to look at GP related medical knowledge as well as management and research. Do not take it after you have had a period away from work (e.g. pregnancy), as you need to have kept up to date on NICE and SIGN guidelines and how these are implemented in practice Revising with others helps There is guidance on how to prepare yourself on the deanery website produced by a collaboration of trainees, trainers PDs and APDs. Do not consider doing in your first year on a 3 year scheme (even though you are allowed to by the regulations)

Reasons to go earlier  Some people find that preparing for the exam helps them to keep a focus on learning knowledge when they are in hospital posts.  The earlier you take it the more opportunities you have to take it again.  Taking it earlier will help you to work out your weak areas if you do not pass and prepare for a second attempt.  With inflation the price of the assessment may increase  There is an enormous amount to do in ST3 without adding preparation for AKT  Everybody else on my scheme is taking it early so it is easier to prepare together  Leaving it late and failing is a high risk strategy

Reasons to go later  College advice is that the most appropriate point, and that providing the highest chance of success, will be whilst working as a GPStR in the final year of their specialty-training programme (ST3).  Taking only once is cheaper than taking it twice  Everybody else on my scheme is taking at the very start of ST3 so it is easier to prepare together.

Mt 26 11 09
