[email protected]</p><p>Abstract—The purpose of this study was to introduce a case of partnership between a state college and local high schools, and also investigate perspectives and expectations of high/middle school students about their future careers in science, engineering and technology. Several high schools in the south-central Indiana region were linked with the technology division at Ivy Tech State College Columbus campus. Students from those high schools came to the state college to participate in design contests to showcase their engineering skills and intelligence; in the meantime, the state college tried to promote their skills and knowledge into college level. The contest activities were welcomed by students and successful. The contest categories included a design knowledge contest, a mechanical or architectural sketching contest, and a CAD (Computer Aided Design) contest for individual students, as well as mechanical model and architectural model building contests for school teams. During the contest, a survey was conducted for both participating students and their industrial engineering and technology teachers. Survey results indicated that the majority of the participating students liked the activities at the state college, and planned to enter colleges for degrees after their graduation from high school. Specifically, more than 70% of participating students preferred their majors in science, engineering and technology. This survey took place twice in a period of two years, showing a positive trend for such student populations. Also, the study indicated that the partnership was significantly important to both high schools and the state college. More high school students learned the engineering and technology programs at the state college better by participating in contests, and finally chose engineering and technology as their majors. Moreover, some contest winners got scholarships at the state college. Obviously, college faculty and high school teachers played significant roles to boost the partnership. The results of this case study would benefit college engineering and technology programs and attract more young students to become tomorrow’s engineers. </p>
