Frank Baum

Since its first publication in 1900, L. Frank Baum’s story of a little girl carried away by a tornado to the strange and beautiful Land of Oz has had an extraordinary emotional impact on wide-eyed readers young and old. Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion and the dog, Toto, help each other find something that they each want.

As Dorothy journeys down the yellow brick road to the Emerald City, hoping the Great and Terrible Wizard who lives there will help her return home, she shares adventures with the three famous characters, defeats a wicked witch, and learns about the power of friendship, loyalty, and self-confidence. While scholars have debated for decades over possible political meanings hidden within the tale, Baum himself claimed he simply wanted to write a “modernized fairy tale of wonderment and joy in which the heartaches and nightmares are left out.” As it has done for generations past, this classic of fantasy adventure speaks movingly about what every child needs: the Woodman’s compassion, the Lion’s courage, and the Scarecrow’s wisdom.

Adapted from: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Wonderful-Wizard-of-Oz/L-Frank-Baum/e/9781593082215/?itm=2

Answer the questions.

1. Then we can make a good guess at the meaning.

Fold this paper in half. Guess what the meaning of “munchkin” is. Don’t use a dictionary or friend. Write or draw a picture of your thoughts.

.

“While Dorothy stood looking at the strange and beautiful sites, she noticed coming toward her a group of the queerest people she had ever seen. They were not as big as the grown folk (people) she had always been used to; but neither were they very small. In fact, they seemed about as tall as Dorothy, who was a well-grown child for her age, although they were, so far as looks go, many years older.

“They wore round hats that rose to a small point a foot above their heads, with bells. The hats of the men were blue and the little woman’s hat was white. The men, Dorothy thought, were about as old as Uncle Henry. But the little woman was much older. Her face was covered with wrinkles, her hair was nearly white. She walked up to Dorothy and said, “You are welcome to the land of Munchkins.”

So what does munchkin mean?

Page | 5 The Wonderful Wizard of Oz ESL 4B R/W; Winter, 2010 Instructor: Chris Conley

Reading strategies

1.
