<p>So What is ASCD? </p><p>As I sat in the audience last evening, I realized that many of the students were probably not familiar with the professional organization that so many of the school administrators referenced during their presentation. So for the benefit of all of the teacher candidates, I have provided just a bit of information about the Association for Supervision and Professional Development (ASCD). </p><p>ASCD describes itself as “a membership organization that develops programs, products and services essential to the way educators learn, teach, and lead.” The most basic membership provides members with a very reader-friendly and topic-focused monthly journal called Educational Leadership , and a regular newsletter, Education Update. Most of us who have been members for a while (20 years and counting for me…)recognize the benefits of advancing to at least the next level of membership (Select Membership), which also includes five complimentary books published by ASCD that “focus on a wide range of award winning titles for educators in every level and subject area.” </p><p>From the website membership page: </p><p>Founded in 1943, ASCD is an educational leadership organization dedicated to advancing best practices and policies for the success of each learner. Our 175,000 members in 119 countries are professional educators from all levels and subject areas–– superintendents, supervisors, principals, teachers, professors of education, and school board members. Perhaps the Education Club would want to pursue learning more about this! </p><p>I never knew about this organization before joining the ranks of public school administrators, but how I wish I had known more about as a beginning classroom teacher! I would highly encourage each of you to consider membership as you begin your career in education.
