<p> PTEAC Minutes Thursday, February 19, 2015 106 Student Services Building 3:00 PM</p><p>Present: Collins, Cooley, Evans (recorder), Gibbs, Kane-Schneider, King, P. Lancaster, McCrea, </p><p>Miller, Schaner, Schutten, Siko, Vree, Ysasi</p><p>Absent: Armstrong, Campbell, Cimitile, Coffey, Golden, Pfahler, Pickett, Vigna</p><p>I. Welcome (Elaine Collins)</p><p>A. Formalization of a student advisory board that would provide input on their </p><p> experiences within the Teacher Preparation program</p><p> i. COE Alumni Association had previously attempted to organize such a group</p><p> ii. Strong level of student interest and excitement on providing feedback</p><p>B. Self-governance</p><p> i. Student run</p><p> ii. Dean’s participation</p><p> iii. Many of the involved students are nearing the conclusion of their collegiate </p><p> experience</p><p> a. Seeking opportunities to form networks earlier in their programs</p><p> b. A strong student network that begins in their pre-admission years, </p><p> that continues through their COE experiences, may prove a very</p><p> powerful vehicle for involvement</p><p>C. Met yesterday for the first time</p><p> i. Concern has shifted from placement concerns to curricular concerns</p><p> ii. Concern related to the sustainability of this group (earlier involvement)</p><p>D. Discussion i. This might be something that we want to target during the second year</p><p> ii. Music example given</p><p> iii. Second major option allows us to identify majors early</p><p> iv. Could it be considered an open group, with a smaller number of “official” </p><p> members?</p><p> v. A diverse age range of those involved would be beneficial</p><p> vi. Teachers of Tomorrow and SCEC would be other examples of groups where </p><p> we can cast this net</p><p> vii. Transitions presentations may also be a good time to mention this</p><p> a. SISC is seeking to change how the Transitions presentations are </p><p> delivered</p><p> b. Considering moving to Saturday morning</p><p>E. Seeking further input from PTEAC on this idea</p><p> i. Also seeking student representatives from the Student Advisory Committee </p><p> on PTEAC and Leadership Team</p><p>II. Discussion of Student Support for the Mathematics PRE (Caryn King)</p><p>A. Math department is currently teaching a one credit PRE prep course</p><p> i. John Golden is leading this initiative</p><p> ii. Designed to help prepare Math majors with their PRE experience</p><p> a. Tracking students enrolled in this course and comparing it with their </p><p>PRE results</p><p>B. Do we want to consider more initiatives in this area?</p><p> i. Dick Cooley has done this in the past for the MTTC</p><p> ii. Concern expressed that this course was not communicated/advertised well a. It is important that we are all communicating these opportunities </p><p> effectively and consistently</p><p> b. The Mathematics Unit Head was unaware of the initiative</p><p> iii. CLAS is working to make similar courses an official curricular opportunity for </p><p> more students in different disciplines</p><p> a. Discussions underway with Maria</p><p> b. Writing workshops have been effective</p><p>C. Are we going to support these types of course offerings in other disciplines in the </p><p> future?</p><p> i. Discussions continue with Maria</p><p> ii. Dick Cooley outlined his efforts with four students who had self-reported on </p><p> their test prep experiences and test results</p><p> iii. Suggestion of a five week course, rather than a semester long experience</p><p> a. Pre-med experiences in prep courses discussed</p><p>D. Discussion</p><p>III. Secondary Admission Task Force (Mary Schutten)</p><p>A. Is there still interest in crafting a Secondary Admission Task Force?</p><p> i. The HB that mandated that students would need to pass their subject area </p><p> test prior to admission has died; it may be reintroduced</p><p> ii. Do we want to continue this discussion?</p><p>B. Who is in the group?</p><p> i. Keith Vree, John Hassenbeck, Raul Ysasi, etc. </p><p>C. Last year we had data that indicated that the majority of our test failures were </p><p> secondary admission students i. Seeking additional ways that we can support these students better, similar to </p><p> the ideas discussed behind helping our students prepare for the PRE</p><p>D. Please proceed with another meeting/discussion with this group and bring the </p><p> information from that group back to PTEAC</p><p> i. Student Success Collaborative may provide additional data that will help us </p><p> identify means to assist our students</p><p>IV. Super Majors (Mary Schutten)</p><p>A. Social Studies is seeking to attempt a Super Major, with the hope that the program </p><p> will be established by Fall 2015</p><p> i. History Department will vote on this next month</p><p> ii. Curriculum may not have final approval prior to Fall 2015</p><p> iii. What is a super major?</p><p> a. A comprehensive major</p><p> b. No minor necessary; several endorsement areas within the major</p><p> c. More intense coursework in each endorsement area</p><p> iv. How will this impact the Elementary Group Social Studies majors?</p><p> a. Will they elect to take a different path?</p><p> b. Yes; examples provided</p><p>B. The comprehensive Social Studies major is a very positive step for our students</p><p>C. Integrated sciences are also working on a comprehensive major, but they are a bit </p><p> further behind</p><p> i. Work continuing</p><p> ii. Committee established</p><p> iii. Working with all of the content areas V. ZS Proposal (Mary Schutten)</p><p>A. New majors/minors task force meeting this week</p><p> i. ZS minor would be housed in the CSAT major</p><p> ii. The second non-teaching minor was not recommended to move forward</p><p> iii. The non-teaching major mirrors many courses that are available through </p><p>Psychology</p><p> a. The writing committee will look to eliminate the redundancies </p><p> b. Psychology will continue to work with the author of these proposals </p><p>(Linda Pickett)</p><p> c. The writing committee will continue to work with Linda Pickett on </p><p> the program proposal</p><p>VI. Announcements</p><p>A. New COE 50th Anniversary Golden Lecture Series bookmarks distributed</p><p> i. Reflections and Predictions next</p><p> ii. The Education of Gerald R. Ford rescheduled in the Seidman Forum on April </p><p>15, 2015</p><p> iii. Discussion on the panel of superintendents</p><p> a. This presentation was videotaped and will be available shortly</p><p> b. Superintendent Flannigan gave very complimentary remarks</p><p>B. Dean Collins has accepted the Presidency at Johnson State College in Vermont </p><p> beginning July 1, 2015 (just about when the snow will melt in Vermont)</p><p>C. Replacement of Dick Cooley on sabbatical next fall</p><p> i. Please send recommendations</p>
