<p>Media Release PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE FORT LEONARD WOOD, MISSOURI 65473 VOICE: 573-563-5034 FAX: 573-563-4012 EMAIL: [email protected]</p><p>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE</p><p>Release No. 11-066 June 6, 2011 Army celebrates 236th birthday with events at FLW</p><p>FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. – The Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood will be celebrating the Army’s 236th birthday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 14, on Gerlach Field. The event, hosted by the MSCoE Noncommissioned Officer Academy, is scheduled to include a streamer ceremony, a cake cutting ceremony with remarks by Maj. Gen. Quantock and Command Sgt. Maj. Wells, and music by the 399th Army Band. In combination with the Army birthday observance, a 3-mile birthday run will begin at 5:30 a.m., June 14. Units will form up in their pre-established areas, and the commanding general will begin the run with the command group, Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and civilians, from the parking lot located on the southwest side of Building 470. The average pace of the run is expected to be about 9 minutes per mile, though individuals may run or walk at their own stride. The general public should be aware that early morning traffic delays are possible due to the birthday run, and personnel should plan accordingly. </p><p>First Sgt. William Bellomy, Senior Leaders Course instructor for the MSCoE NCO Academy, and event organizer said, "We are looking forward to commemorating the Army's 236th birthday at Fort Leonard Wood. </p><p>“Members of all components, all branches of service, and civilians are invited to stop by to take a few moments out of their day to enjoy the celebration."</p><p>Bellomy added, "In addition to a cake cutting ceremony, we thought that having a morning birthday run was an appropriate way to observe the 236th Army birthday—all runners and walkers are welcome." The birthday celebration is free and open to the public. In the case of inclement weather, the birthday celebration and cake cutting ceremony will be held indoors at Nutter Field House.
