All exams are cumulative, in that you are expected to know all material covered on earlier exams. Missed Exams: A student who has legitimately missed an exam because of a documented, excused absence that conforms to the University Senate Rules will simply have 300 total points, rather than 400 points possible points from exams. Students who have two such absences will have their final exam count 200 points instead of 100. Students who miss three or more exams or the final exam for any reason will receive an “E” unless the dean of their college allows them to withdraw. Students who miss an exam without an excuse will receive a zero for that exam.

Grading: A total of 500 points are awarded in this course: 100 for each of the three fifty minute exams, and 100 for the required final exam. An additional 100 points will be awarded for the required online homework assignments. The assignment of grades will be based on the following percentages: A = 100-80; B = 79-70; C = 69-60; D= 59-50. Typically the class average is in the 60% range.

Academic Integrity: Cheating and plagiarism will no be tolerated, and the minimum penalty will be the student receiving an “E”.

Course Objectives: This course is the first part of a two-part introduction to the principles of organic chemistry, the chemistry of the compounds of carbon. The content can be classified as structure, reactivity, and synthesis. You will learn how atoms are joined together in organic compounds, how their structure affects their bulk properties, how we can gain information about the structure of unknown organic compounds, and how organic compounds are transformed into other organic compounds. Keeping up in this class is essential. Come to class. Take notes. Do the homework. At the least, read over the material we are covering before you come to class. Keeping up is the only way to make it through.
